Quincy, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners split its doubleheader at Quincy on Saturday afternoon taking the opener 2-0 behind a four-hit complete game shutout from
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) before falling in the nightcap 8-0 in five innings. S&T (10-21, 2-10 GLVC) banged out 10 hits in the doubleheader led by
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) with three and
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) had two.
Game 1 – Lady Miners 2 Quincy 0The Lady Miners scored all the runs they needed in the first inning in the opener. With two outs
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) walked, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Fedorchak's double down the left field line. Baker followed with a single scoring Fedorchak and advanced to second on the throw home.
That would be all the run support that Viets needed as she held the Hawks (11-13, 6-6 GLVC) in check for the game. She held them to two hits in the first six innings giving up single hits in the first and fourth innings but was able to escape unscathed.
Quincy scratched out two hits in the seventh inning and had the tying runs on base but Viets was able to get a groundout to short ending the game.
S&T outhit the Hawks 7-4 in the opener with Fedorchak and Baker leading the way with two each.
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central),
Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) and
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) had a hit each in the contest. Viets needed just 83 pitches to pick up her first shutout of the season and finished with three strikeouts against no walks.
Game 2 Quincy 8 Lady Miners 0In the backend of the doubleheader Quincy jumped on top in the first inning on a two-run homer from Rachel Scrum to right center. The Hawks added to their lead with two more in the third on a home run by Samantha Ledbetter to lead off the inning and a double from Meghan Quirk after an error allowed Scrum to reach.
Quincy capped it off with a four run fourth highlighted by Lindsey Greene's three-run homer to left center.
S&T finished with just three hits in the second game with Baker, Franceschini and
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) recording one each.
Ashley Rausch (Washington, Iowa/Washington) got the start in the nightcap and allowed eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts and a walk to fall to 1-1 on the season.
The Lady Mines conclude their eight-game roadtrip on Tuesday when they travel to Springfield, Mo., to take on Drury University at 4 p.m.
