Kirksville, Mo. – Missouri S&T's softball squad had its winning streak snapped on Friday dropping a 2-1 decision in the opener and a 7-1 contest in the nightcap at Truman State on Friday afternoon. S&T (9-20, 1-9 GLVC) managed just nine hits in the doubleheader and was led by
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) and
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) with two hits each.
Game 1 - Truman State 2 S&T 1The Lady Miners
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) and Truman's (17-7, 9-1 GLVC) Kelsea Dorsey were locked in a pitcher's duel in the opener on Friday.
The Bulldogs struck first in the home half of the first as Christa Reisinger singled, stole second, went to third on a sacrifice and scored on a base hit by Lex Van Nostrand.
S&T evened the score in the fourth. Fedorchak led off the inning with a walk and was run for by
Rachel Aiardo (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North). Baker was hit by pitch followed by
Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth)'s sacrifice.
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field which was deep enough to score Aiardo. Viets had a chance to help her own cause but popped up to second to end the inning.
The Lady Miners got out of jams in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but were unable to escape trouble in the seventh. Reisinger led off the inning with a single, stole second and went to third on a groundout to Viets. Van Nostrand drove in the game winner with a sacrifice fly to right field.
S&T was outhit in the opener 8-3 as
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ), Fedorchak and Franceschini had a hit each. Viets was the tough luck loser allowing two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks on 115 pitches.
Game 2 – Truman State 7 S&T 1Truman struck first again in game two putting up three runs in the bottom of the first with Cate Simon delivering the big blow with a two-run double. Whitney Richardson also had an RBI single in the frame.
The Bulldogs added another run in the second and tacked on three more in the fourth as Simon again did the damage hitting a two-run homer to make it 7-0.
The Lady Miners got on the board in the sixth as
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) led off the inning with a single. With two outs Davis advanced to second on a throwing error and scored on Baker's single.
S&T finished with six hits in the nightcap led by Baker with two. Davis, Fedorchak, Heckemeyer and
Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) had one hit each.
Courtney Jackson (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) suffered the loss allowing seven runs on eight hits with five walks in 3.1 innings.
Ashley Rausch (Washington, Iowa/Washington) went the final 2.2 innings allowing no runs on five hits.
The Lady Miners are back in action on Saturday traveling to Quincy, Ill., to take on the Quincy Hawks in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
