PITTSBURG, Kan. – A 10-run outburst in the fifth inning propelled Missouri S&T to a
12-2 non-conference victory Wednesday afternoon over Pittsburg State, the third win in the last four games for the Miners.
Trailing 2-1 when the inning began, the Miners sent 14 batters to the plate and posted their highest run output in an inning since March 3, 2012 when they scored 12 times in one frame against Harris-Stowe.
The inning began when Brandon Martinkus – one of eight pitchers employed by the Gorillas (5-13) – hit
Collin Zurweller (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) with a pitch. After
Matt Reschke (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) drew a four-pitch walk,
Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles) tripled into the gap in right center to chase home both runners and put S&T into the lead.
Cameron Burk followed by lining a double into left center to make it 4-2 and chased Martinkus in the process, then after
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) greeted Derek Jacobs with a hit,
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) doubled both runners home to give the Miners a four-run lead before a batter had been retired in the inning.
With one out,
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) singled through the hole between third and short to plate Karbowski.
Later in the inning, S&T loaded the bases again and Swindle singled up the middle to drive home two. Then after a pair of wild pitches brought in the ninth run of the frame, Burk drove in the 10
th with a hit.
Pittsburg State grabbed the early lead in the contest on a RBI single by Jacob Boylan in the first, but Ulrich led off the second with a home run to straight away center to tie it. Boylan put the Gorillas back in the lead in the third with a sacrifice fly, but PSU had only four baserunners reach base from the fourth inning on.
The Miners tallied their final run in the sixth on a double play ball that saw Karbowski score on the play.
Bryan Nolan (Ballwin, Mo./St. Louis University HS), the second of the four pitchers used by S&T Wednesday, picked up his first collegiate win in two innings of work in relief of starter
Ryan Bearden (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood).
Quintan Reed (Smithville, Mo./Smithville) threw two scoreless innings in back of Nolan and
Brannon Callaway (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) threw a scoreless seventh as the game was called after seven innings due to the mercy rule.
S&T (11-5) outhit Pitt State 12-8 with five different Miners getting two hits apiece. Swindle drove in four runs – all in the decisive fifth inning – while Karbowski, Ulrich and Burk all drove in two each.
The Miners resume play Satuday when they take part in the Midwest Region Crossover at Grant Park in Westfield, Ind. S&T faces Cedarville at 10:30 a.m. (Eastern time) in its first of four games at the event and takes on Saint Joseph's at 1:30 p.m.
