WESTFIELD, Ind. – Missouri S&T got on top early and broke loose in the late innings, backing the shutout pitching of
Keith Coulson (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) to defeat Saint Joseph's
7-0 Saturday at the Midwest Region Crossover at Grant Park.
The Miners' other game Saturday in the weekend event against Cedarville was cancelled on account of weather.
S&T scored in the opening inning on a leadoff triple by
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) and a sacrifice fly by
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central), then tallied an unearned run in the second when
Justus Nelson (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) walked with one out, moved up an infield single by
Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) and came around to score when
Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, Texas/Cushing) reached on an error.
Coulson kept the Pumas in check throughout the afternoon, as he allowed no more than one baserunner in any inning as he scattered five hits and walked just one to record his second complete game shutout of the season.
The Pumas' best chance against him came in the fourth when Brenden Rivera led the inning off with a double, but he was stranded there. Saint Joseph's was held without a hit after the sixth inning and the Miners began pulling away after Coulson got through that frame.
Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) was hit by a pitch to open the seventh, then following a hit by
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney), a wild pitch and a walk to
Eli Miller (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville) to load the bases, Johnson scored on a double play ball to extend the Miner lead to 3-0.
The Miners broke it open in the ninth, opening the inning with four straight hits to plate the first two of the four runs they scored. Singles by Ulrich and Miller were followed by an opposite field double off the bat of
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) to score Ulrich and a hit by Nelson to bring home Miller.
Portwood scored moments later on a ground out by Richter, then a bunt single with two outs by Bodenstab scored Nelson with the fourth run of the inning.
Missouri S&T outhit the Pumas (7-9) 12-5 in the game, with Bodenstab and Ulrich getting three apiece. The Miners also got two hits each from Miller and Richter as they won for the fourth time in their last five games to improve to 12-5 on the year.
S&T will face Grand Valley State and Tiffin tomorrow, beginning with the GVSU game at 1:30 p.m. (Eastern time).
