Rosemont, Ill. – Trailing by five runs with three outs to go the Missouri S&T Lady Miners stormed back with five runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game then won it on
Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland )'s walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the eighth for a
6-5 win over Walsh on Saturday afternoon in Rosemont, Ill. It was the second straight win for S&T (2-9) who outhit the Cavaliers 13-9 in the contest.
Walsh (2-1) scored the first run of the game in the top of the second on a pair of doubles. Danni Murtaugh led off the inning with a double into the right field corner. Mariah Rock came into run for her and went to a third on a groundout and scored on Nikki Newman's double down the left field line.
The Cavaliers added to their lead with two outs in the fourth on a throwing error by
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) on a pickoff attempt at third allowing Anna Anderson to score. Walsh then added three runs in the seventh with three hits and a couple of errors to make it 5-0.
The Lady Miners rally started innocently in the home half of the seventh. Baker was called out as her popup hit the roof of the dome but was reversed because the ball was in foul territory. With the new lease on life Baker ripped a double to center then
Morgan Imhoff (Jamestown, Mo./Jamestown) lined a single up the middle to put runners on the corner.
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way North) came onto run for Imhoff and stole second. With one out
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) singled to deep short scoring Baker. After an infield fly,
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) singled to center loading the bases for
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central).
Franceschini lined the first pitch she saw into the gap in right center driving in three runs to make it 5-4. Ryan Kuula came in to relieve starter Olivia Pifer and
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) greeted her with a bloop single in front of a diving centerfielder to bring in Franceschini with the tying run.
Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) followed with a bloop single to right center sending to Slemp to third but Baker flew out to center field to end the inning. S&T sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh and recorded seven hits in the frame.
In the eighth inning Walsh started with a runner at second, due to international tie breaker, Newman then grounded a ball to Slemp at short who charged tagged the runner out going to third and fired to first in time to complete the double play. Abby Reusser then grounded out to second to end the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth Baker started at second and went to third on a sacrifice from Imhoff. Badalamenti worked a full count before lining past the shortstop to score Baker.
Slemp led the offense with three hits while Davis, Badalamenti and Weiss had two hits each. Franceschini drove in three runs while Baker had two runs scored.
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) picked up the win allowing five runs, three earned, on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk in eight innings of work.
