S&T’s rally comes up short against Grand Valley

Rosemont, Ill. – Missouri S&T's two out rally in the top of the seventh came up a run short in its 4-3 loss against Grand Valley State on Friday afternoon. Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) had two hits in the contest and Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) had a two-run single in the top of the seventh.

Grand Valley (1-0) jumped in front in the home half of the first on a two out, two-run single down the left field line from Ellie Balbach.

S&T (0-9) had a chance in the top of the fifth getting its first two runners on base, but a strikeout, a lineout and a groundout ended the threat. The Lakers added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Balbach drove in her third run of the game with a double to left center. Balbach scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to right center off the bat of Chelsea Horvath to make it 4-0.

The Lady Miners got on the board in the top of the seventh. Badalamenti led off the inning with a single into left center. With one out Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) singled to left to put runners on first and second. A groundout to the right side put runners on second and third with two out. Franceschini lined a single into center field scoring both runs and advanced to second on the throw home. Slemp then singled up the middle on a 1-2 pitch to make it a one run game.

Savannah Fedorcahk then worked a seven pitch at-bat but grounded out to short to end the game.

S&T finished the game with seven hits led by Badalamenti. Davis, Franceschini, Slemp, Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) and Weiss had a hit each. Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) suffered the loss allowing four runs, all earned, on eight hits and allowed two walks in four innings of work. Ashley Hill (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) pitched the final two innings allowing only two hits.
