Lady Miners defeat Wayne State 3-1 for first win of 2016

Rosemont, Ill. - The Missouri S&T softball squad picked up its first win of the 2016 season earning a 3-1 win over Wayne State on Friday night at the Dome at the Ballpark. The win is also the first career win for head coach Cathy Monroe.

S&T (1-9) struck first in the top of the first after two were retired. Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) singled to left and then on a 3-2 pitch Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) blasted a two-run homer to center field for her first of the season.

The Lady Miners added to their lead in the top of third as Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) led off with a triple to right center and scored on a groundout to second by Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central).

Wayne State (1-1) got one back in the home half of the third as Lindsay Butler led off with a ground-rule double to center and then moved to third on a groundout to second. With two outs Shelby Spano singled up the middle to drive in Butler.

S&T had chances to add to its lead with one out doubles in the fourth and fifth innings but were unable to get a key hit to add any insurance runs.

Courtney Jackson (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) set down the Warriors in order in the fifth and sixth innings before running into trouble to start the seventh. She walked back-to-back hitters to open the frame and then Ashley Hill (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) came on in relief. She struck out the first hitter she faced, got Butler to ground out to second for the second out as the tying run moved into scoring position. Hill sealed the victory getting Allie Buchanan to hit a pop up off the roof of the dome for the final out.

The Lady Miners outhit Wayne State 7-5 and were led by Heckemeyer and Davis with two apiece. Slemp, Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) and Morgan Imhoff (Jamestown, Mo./Jamestown) had a hit each. Jackson went the first six-plus innings allowing an earned run on five hits with a strikeout and three walks to earn her first collegiate victory. Hill retired the final three hitters on seven pitches to pick up her first save.

S&T is back in action on Saturday afternoon taking on Walsh at 3:30 p.m., and then will face Upper Iowa at 8 p.m. at the Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont, Ill.
