Miners sweep Bearcats to complete 4-0 opening weekend

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T completed a sweep of its four-game weekend Sunday as the offense propelled the Miners to wins of 7-2 and 10-8 over visiting Southwest Baptist.

The Miners responded to SBU's rally efforts in both games, using a four-run sixth inning to finally break free in game one and overcoming the Bearcats' rally from a seven-run deficit in the nightcap by scoring twice in the seventh to complete the sweep.

S&T scored in the opening inning of game one when Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) walked with one out and scored on a two-out triple into the left field corner by Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney).  The Miners added to their lead in the fourth when Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Collin Zurweller (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East)'s sacrifice fly.

The Bearcats cut the lead in half in the fifth on a pinch-hit RBI single by Sean Murley, but S&T answered back in the bottom half on back-to-back doubles by Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) and Ulrich.  SBU again cut the lead to one in the sixth before the Miners exploded in their half of the inning.

With one out, Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) was hit by a pitch and came around to score on Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman)'s triple to right center.  Johnson followed by singling through a drawn-in infield to make it 5-2, then with two outs, Ulrich belted a home run to left to complete the four run uprising.

S&T starter Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield) pitched into the seventh to pick up the win on the mound, as he allowed just one earned run and struck out a career-high 10 hitters.  The Miners outhit SBU 11-7 in the game, with Ulrich getting three hits and Karbowski and Portwood getting two apiece.

After spotting the Bearcats a run in the first in the nightcap, the Miners took the lead with four in the second with only two hits leaving the infield.

S&T loaded the bases with nobody out, then Eli Miller (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville) walked on a full count pitch and Nathan Volkmann (Liberty, Mo./Liberty) also drew a walk to force home the first two runs.  A fielder's choice off the bat of Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles) scored the third run, then S&T's fourth run of the inning came as the result of an infield single by Johnson with two outs.

The Miners added three in the third, getting an RBI double by Miller and a two-run single by Volkmann, followed by a run in the fourth when Ulrich drove in Bodenstab with an opposite field single to give the Miners an 8-1 lead.

SBU got a run back in the fifth, then scored six runs off two Miner relievers in the sixth to tie the score.  After Dan Borek (Greenville, Wis./Hortonville) went to the mound for S&T in the seventh and escaped from a two-on, no-out jam, the Miners got the lead for him in the bottom of the seventh.

Portwood and Zurweller drew back-to-back four-pitch walks to open the inning, then following a lineout to right by Miller that advanced Portwood to third and a stolen base by Zurweller, Richter – in the game as a pinch-hitter – blooped a single over the drawn-in infield to bring home Portwood with the go-ahead run.

Swindle gave the Miners an insurance run with an opposite field hit to score Zurweller moments later.

Borek retired the Bearcats (4-3) in order in the eighth and ninth innings to pick up the win in relief.   He also struck out four in his appearance to complete a day by Miner pitchers in which they recorded 25 strikeouts in the two contests.

S&T had a 13-10 advantage in hits in the nightcap, led by Ulrich's three as he finished the day going six-of-eight at the plate with six runs batted in and hit for the cycle over the course of the doubleheader.  Johnson and Swindle also had two hits apiece for S&T while Volkmann drove in three runs.

The 4-0 start for the Miners is just the second in the history of the program and first since 1969.  Missouri S&T will look to extend their start to the season Saturday when it opens a four-game series with Minnesota-Crookston with a noon doubleheader.
