ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T used some late inning heroics to keep its undefeated record intact Saturday afternoon, rallying from three deficits to pull out an
8-7 win in the second game of its doubleheader with Minnesota-Crookston. The Miners won the opener
10-4 and improved to 6-0 on the year with the sweep of Saturday's twinbill.
S&T trailed 3-1, 4-3 and 7-6 in the nightcap, falling behind the third time when Reed Hjelle belted a three-run homer in the top of ninth to put the Golden Eagles on top. But with one out in the bottom half of the inning, the Miners loaded the bases and won the game on a throwing error on a potential game-ending double play ball, allowing the tying and winning runs to score.
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) started the rally by reaching on an infield single on a ball in the hole and went to third when
Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) blooped a single into left center. Following a walk to
Nathan Volkmann (Liberty, Mo./Liberty) that loaded the bases,
Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles) hit a ball to second baseman Thomas Kinsella, who stepped on second for the second out but threw the ball wide of first to score Richter with the winning run after Bodenstab had crossed the plate.
The Golden Eagles had taken a 2-0 lead in the first on Ryan Haggstrom's two run homer off S&T starter
Keith Coulson (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central), then after the Miners cut the lead in half in the third on an RBI double by
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney), UMC extended the lead by scoring again in the fourth.
S&T knotted the contest up in the sixth when Swindle beat out a double play ball to score
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe), then
Eli Miller (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville) followed with a double to tie the game. UMC regained the lead in the seventh when Haggstrom scored on a wild pitch, but a mental error by Haggstrom in the bottom of the inning allowed the Miners to draw even again.
With
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) on second with one out, Portwood grounded out to Haggstrom at first but thinking it was the third out of the inning, Haggstrom tossed the ball into the middle of the infield, which allowed Karbowski to come home with the tying run.
Karbowski then gave the Miners their first lead of the nightcap by delivering a two-out, two-run single to give S&T a 6-4 lead, before the Golden Eagles got the three-run homer from Hjelle in the ninth off
Luke Marcheschi (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) – who ended up getting the win after the Miners' ninth inning rally.
The Miners outhit UMC 10-9 in the second half, with Miller getting two of the hits in his first game in the leadoff spot.
S&T's leadoff hitter in the opener, Bodenstab, had a huge offensive game to help pace the Miners – who scored in every inning -- in the game one win.
Bodenstab scored the first run of the game when he drew a leadoff walk, stole second and came home on a double by Karbowski. After S&T scored again in the second on Richter's RBI single, the Golden Eagles scored three in the third to move in front.
However, Bodenstab sparked another rally with a triple into the left field corner and scored on
Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union)'s single. Then with two outs, Ulrich doubled and came around to score on a hit by Portwood.
S&T added to its lead with a run in the fourth – on Bodenstab's second triple and a hit by Johnson – two more in the fifth on RBI hits by Miller and Richter and three more in the sixth, two of them scoring on a hit by Miller.
Portwood had three hits to lead S&T's 14-hit attack in game one, while Bodenstab became the sixth player in Miner history to record two triples in the same game and scored three times. Miller had three RBI on his two hits in the contest.
Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield) pitched the first six innings to get the win and improved his record to 2-0, scattering six hits and striking out seven.
The Miners and Golden Eagles, who opened their 2016 campaign on Saturday, will wrap up their weekend series with another doubleheader Sunday starting at noon.
