UMSL's hot shooting sends Miners to first loss of season

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T was unable to keep pace with a hot-shooting Missouri-St. Louis team Saturday afternoon as the Tritons snapped the Miners' season-opening six-game winning streak with a  91-74 Great Lakes Valley Conference win at Billy Key Court.

After taking a 58-57 lead with just under 13 minutes remaining, the Miners allowed the Tritons score on six straight possessions as UMSL took an eight-point lead over a span of three minutes.   The Tritons were able to keep S&T at bay as they shot 64.3 percent in the second half while the Miners tailed off from the floor in the final 20 minutes.

The Miners led for much of the early going, holding a 15-12 lead following a fast break lay-in by Telloy Simon (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's) at the 12:50 mark.  UMSL scored five straight to take the lead, then after Ervin Sarajlic (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) tied the game with a basket, UMSL outscored S&T 16-6 over the next five minutes to take a 10-point lead.

UMSL still led by seven with two minutes to go in the half before the Miners made a surge before the intermission, getting to within two at 45-43 when Simon made two free throws in the final minute of the half.

S&T shot 62.5 percent from the field in the first half, but after an initial run that saw it take a five-point lead in the opening minutes of the second half, the shots weren't falling for the Miners as the period wore on.

A layup by Danylo Zuikov (Kiev, Ukraine/LaLumiere School) gave the Miners their 58-57 lead, but UMSL's Hunter Reine tipped in a miss at the other end on the Tritons' next trip down the floor and after S&T missed a shot in an effort to go back in front, Rolla native Kobe Wands knocked down a three-pointer to give the Tritons a four-point lead.

Following a steal and a basket by Elijah Watson that pushed the UMSL lead to six, Zuikov hit a three to cut that lead in half.  That, however, would end up being the closest the Miners would get over the final 11-plus minutes, as the Tritons ran off 12 of the next 14 points to extend the margin to 13 with 7:26 to go.

S&T went just 12-of-34 (35.3 percent) from the field in the second half and ended the contest at 46.6 percent, but did have four players finish in double figures in the scoring column, led by Simon and Jalen Myers (Shorewood, IL/Minooka) with 14 points apiece.  Randy Holmes (St. Louis, MO/Soldan International Studies) added 13 while Rokas Paulauskas (Talsiai, Lithuania/Hamilton Heights Acad.) recorded his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Alex Majewski – who came into the game averaging just four points per game – scored 15 for UMSL (5-4, 1-1 GLVC) in the first half and ended up leading six Tritons in double figures with 17.  Wands and Steven Davis added 12 apiece as UMSL shot 58.3 percent from the field on the afternoon.

The Miners (6-1, 1-1 GLVC) will return to action Wednesday when they host Robert Morris-Peoria in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Billy Key Court to close out their three-game homestand.
