ROLLA, Mo. – Buoyed by the inside-outside duo of
Rokas Paulauskas (Talsiai, Lithuania/Hamilton Heights Acad.) and
Jalen Myers (Shorewood, IL/Minooka), Missouri S&T posted an
82-69 win over Maryville in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener and extended its season-opening winning streak to six games in the process.
Myers led all scorers in the game with 23 points, which included five of the Miners' 11 three-point baskets, while Paulauskas scored a career-high 22 points as he went 11-of-15 from the field.
After Maryville scored the initial basket of the game, Myers hit a three-pointer on S&T's first trip down the floor to give the Miners a lead they would never relinquish. His second three-pointer just over three minutes into play capped an early 8-0 run by S&T, who would lead by as much as 12 in the opening half.
The Miners held a pair of 12-point leads in the first half, the latter at 22-10 following a lay-in by Paulauskas at the 9:33 mark. However, the Saints began cutting into the margin and got it down to two before the opening half ended, before Myers hit another trey just prior to the intermission to give S&T a 36-31 advantage.
Maryville hung close during the early minutes of the second half and after a three-point play by Forrester Sims, had the lead back down to three with 13:32 to go. But the Miners responded by going on a 15-4 burst, capped by a three-pointer by
Danylo Zuikov (Kiev, Ukraine/LaLumiere School) with just over nine minutes remaining, to take their largest lead of the contest at 63-49.
Missouri S&T's lead never sunk below double figures for the balance of the night, as it shot 54.5 percent from the field in the second half and outrebounded the Saints by seven after trailing in that department at the break.
In addition, the Miners held down Maryville from long range, as it went just three-of-21 from beyond the arc.
The Miners also got a season-high 14 points from Zuikov, while Paulauskas, who tallied 16 of his 22 points in the second half, pulled down seven boards for the Miners, who had a 37-33 advantage on the boards. S&T also dished out 16 assists, getting five apiece from
Randy Holmes (St. Louis, MO/Soldan International Studies) and
Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights).
Anthony Johnson led three Saints (2-7, 0-1 GLVC) in double figures with 13 points, while Forrester Sims and Grant Sims both finished with 12.
Missouri S&T (6-0, 1-0 GLVC) will host Missouri-St. Louis (4-4, 0-1 GLVC) Saturday at 3 p.m. at Billy Key Court. The Tritons dropped a 69-68 decision Thursday at Drury.
