St. Joseph, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners overcame a 12-point fourth quarter deficit outscoring Northwest Missouri 26-11 in the final 8:27 to defeat the Bearcats 68-65 on Saturday afternoon at the MWSU Fieldhouse in St. Joseph, Mo.
Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) scored 17 points off the bench to provide a spark and
Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) added 10 more in the victory.
S&T (4-2) opened the game on a 6-1 run and led for a majority of the quarter until NWMSU (5-2) tied it on a three-pointer by Taryne Shull with 4:12 to go in the opening period. The Lady Miners regained the lead on a free throw from Greenwood and then got back-to-back buckets from
Aricca Daye (Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines East) and
Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./Guardian Angels Central Catholic) to build a five point advantage late in the quarter. The Bearcats cut the deficit to three on a layup by Arbrie Benson and then S&T had a chance to extend its lead but
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic)'s three-point shot at the buzzer rattled out.
The Lady Miners held a 19-16 lead early in the second quarter when Northwest went on a 10-0 run in a span of 2:24 to grab a seven-point advantage. S&T responded with a 9-2 run of its own tying the game on a three-pointer by
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) from the right corner with less than two minutes to play in the second quarter. The Bearcats regained the lead scoring four straight points on jumpers from Jasmin Howe and Carlie Willhelmi with less than a minute to go in the half. Douvier brought the Lady Miners back to within a pair with a layup and Daye had a chance to tie the game right before the intermission but missed a layup. Northwest took advantage of the miss as Shull scored on jumper in the lane with 0:03 left giving the Bearcats a 34-30 lead at the break.
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) scored the first five points of the third quarter to put S&T back in front 35-34 2:02 into the frame. Howe then began to take the game over scoring 13 of the next 15 points for Northwest as it outscored the Lady Miners 15-5 to build a nine-point lead late in the quarter. Greenwood made it a 49-42 putting home an offensive rebound near the end of the quarter.
The Bearcats charged out of the gates in the fourth quarter scoring the first five points to build its 12-point lead and forced S&T to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, Brown hit a jumper to make it a 10-pont game and the Lady Miners used their full court press to rattle the Bearcats. The pressure worked as S&T scored 13 straight points and regained the lead on a jumper by
Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) with less than five minutes to go in the game.

The two sides then went back-and-forth as Howe hit two free throws to but Northwest back in front but
Kim Runge (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) scored on the other end to give the Lady Miners the lead back. S&T led 58-56 when Shull hit another three to give the Bearcats the one-point lead back with 2:22 to play. Greenwood scored on the ensuing possession as Daye drove the lane and found her wide open on the left side for an easy layup to make it 60-59. Shull was fouled on the following possession and hit both free throws to give Northwest a 61-60 advantage.
The Lady Miners struggled at the foul line for most of the game but hit them when it counted going 8-for-8 at the charity stripe in the final 1:16. Daye hit two free throws to give S&T the lead for good and then Daye got a steal and Greenwood was fouled hitting two more free throws to make it 64-61 with 0:46 left. Benson was fouled on the next possession and made both to make it a one-point game with 30.7 seconds to go. The Bearcats were forced to foul and fouled Daye who again hit both free throws to make it 66-63 with 0:32 to go. After a timeout, Benson scored on drive down the right side of the lane to make it a one-point game with 0:21 left. The Lady Miners turned over the inbounds pass and Northwest had a golden chance to retake the lead but Howe threw a bounce pass at the feet of
Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ) who grabbed the loose ball and was fouled with 11.4 left. Gray stepped to the line and hit both free throws to make it 68-65. Out of timeouts the Bearcats had to go the length of the floor, Howe's three-point attempt from 30 feet out rattled out and Benson's putback attempt at the buzzer was short to seal the victory.
S&T finished the game shooting 40.3 percent from the floor, they outrebounded the Bearcats 41-37 and forced 14 turnovers which resulted in 19 points for the Lady Miners.
Northwest shot 40.7 percent from the field in the game and was 9-for-20 from the three-point line but only shot 53 percent at the charity stripe. Howe led all scorers with 20 points while Shull added 13 and Willhelmi finished with 11.
S&T begins a four-game homestand on Thursday, December, 1 hosting the Maryville Saints to open Great Lakes Valley Conferecne at 5:30 p.m. at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
