Lady Miners down Saints 54-47 to open GLVC play

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 54-47 win over the Maryville Saints on Thursday evening at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. S&T (5-2, 1-0 GLVC) snapped a seven game losing streak to the Saints (3-3, 0-1 GLVC) and a three-game losing streak in GLVC openers.

Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) got S&T off on the right foot scoring the first four points of the contest and then Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) scored the next four as the Lady Miners held an 8-5 lead with 3:21 left in the first quarter. Maryville ended the quarter scoring the last six points of the frame all from the foul line as it went 7-for-7 at the charity stripe in the first 10 minutes.

The Lady Miners stormed out of the gates with a 10-2 run to begin the second quarter to regain a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) and Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./Guardian Angels Central Catholic) combined to score all 10 points in that run. S&T stretched its lead to eight points on a three-point from Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) just past the midway point of the quarter. The Lady Miners had a couple of opportunities to extend the lead but missed a couple of layups and the Saints took advantage cutting the lead to 23-20 after a three from Brooklyn Chaffin with 3:23 left in the frame. Raley answered back with her second trey of the quarter to make it a six-point game but a jumper by Ali Ringering brought Maryville within 26-22 at the intermission.

S&T shot 40 percent (10-for-25) from the floor in the first half and converted 12 Saint turnovers into 12 points. Greenwood led all scorers with eight points in the half, Raley added six while J. Douvier and S. Douvier had four points each.

Maryville was held to just 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) shooting in the first 20 minutes but did outrebound the Lady Miners 20-11. Alex Wolf led the Saints with seven points and Chaffin dropped in five.

S&T started out the third quarter like it did the second quarter using a 13-3 run over the first 5:30 minutes of the second half to build its largest lead of the night at 39-25 after a layup by Brown. The Saints cut the deficit to nine points with less than three minutes to go in the quarter after a three from Jordyne Dugger. The Lady Miners would carry that nine point lead into the final stanza.

J. Douvier gave S&T its double digit lead back a minute into the fourth quarter but Maryville began to chip away at the lead with an 8-2 run over the next 6:30 getting to within 45-40 after a layup from Wolf. The Saints still trailed by five with 0:40 to play when Greenwood nailed a three-pointer from the left wing to extend the Lady Miner lead to eight points. S&T made a couple of free throws before Stephanie Sherwood threw in a three-pointer with 0:11 to cut the lead back to five. The Lady Miners sealed the game at the foul line as Aricca Daye (Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines East) was fouled with 0:04 left and hit both free throws.

S&T finished the game shooting 36 percent (20-for-55) from the field, made 4-of-16 attempts from downtown and shot 67 percent at the foul line. It was outrebounded by Maryville 38-31 but turned 20 Saint turnovers into 21 points and the Lady Miner bench outscored the Saint bench 34-11. Greenwood was the lone S&T player to reach double figures with 11 points. Brown added nine points and 10 rebounds while J. Douvier contributed eight points and 11 rebounds. Daye dished out eight assists.

Maryville was held to 33 percent (17-for-52) shooting from the floor and made only four three-pointers in the contest. The Saints were 9-for-9 at the foul line. Wolf finished with a game-high 15 points while Chaffin added eight points.

The Lady Miners continue its four game homestand on Saturday taking on the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons in 1 p.m. tip at Billy Key Court. The Tritons lost at Drury 72-58 on Thursday to fall to 3-3, 0-1 GLVC on the season.
