Windsor's overtime goal nets Miners victory over Prairie Stars

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A win is a win, no matter how long it takes – and as Missouri S&T keeps posting victories, it continues to move up in the Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer standings as a result.

Riley Windsor (Delaware, OH/Worthington Christian) scored with 1:07 remaining in the second overtime to give the Miners a 2-1 win Sunday at Illinois Springfield, capping a weekend where S&T pulled out two games in the final stages heading into a three-game homestand that begins Friday.

Sunday's win was the fourth in succession for the Miners, who moved into second place in the GLVC at 6-0-3 in league play after No. 1-ranked Rockhurst upended No. 19 Southern Indiana – who was second when the day began – 2-1 in overtime in Evansville, Ind.  The top five teams in the GLVC are separated by just two games through Sunday's action.

The Prairie Stars got on the board first when Jack Toombes scored in the 18th minute of play, but S&T answered back in the 28th minute on an unassisted goal by Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) to tie the contest.

The contest remained tied at the half with both teams taking five shots.  However, the second half saw the Prairie Stars get more opportunities as they outshot S&T 7-1, but Miner goalkeeper Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) turned away all three of those shots that were on goal and the defense held off four UIS corner kick opportunities.

After a scoreless first overtime period and a second that lasted nearly nine minutes, the Miners pulled out the game on their 10th shot of the contest when Windsor got a pass from Bryce Johnson (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt South) and put his only shot of the game past goalkeeper Tommy Geile for the victory.

UIS had a 16-10 advantage in shots – the difference coming in the second half as both teams had four attempts in overtime – while Hohenstein turned away eight shots on net.

The Miners, now 7-1-4 overall, open their upcoming three-game homestand Friday when they host Bellarmine in a 7:30 p.m. contest at the S&T Soccer Field.
