ROLLA, Mo. – Despite missing some golden chances to pull out a win Friday night, Missouri S&T came away with a
2-2 draw against Bellarmine in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
The Miners missed on three breakaway opportunities in the second half – two of which came right before the Knights scored the game-tying goal – but held the visitors off the scoreboard for the balance of the evening to maintain their unbeaten record in GLVC play heading into a showdown Sunday with No. 22-ranked Southern Indiana.
S&T took the initial lead in the game in the sixth minute when
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) took a feed from
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) and put a shot by Knight goalkeeper Zach Pogue. That would turn out to be the only goal of an opening half in which the teams combined for six shots.
The Knights took the play to the Miners' end of the field at the start of the second half and tied the score on Nathan Jones' shot from the wing to the far post in the 59
th minute.
But moments later, Andrade struck again when he took a ball in, had his initial attempt deflected off a defender into air and he headed it in to put S&T back on top.
Less than 10 minutes later,
Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla) got loose twice behind the Bellarmine, but had his first effort blocked and shot the second one just wide of the net.
Two minutes after Parks' shot that went wide, the Knights got a free kick chance a little over 25 yards from the goal and Callum Southern drilled it into the corner of the net to tie it up again.
Hohenstein stopped another effort by Southern later in the half before the Miners got another breakaway in the final minute, but goalkeeper Tommy Hebert stopped
Eric Ferenbach (Godfrey, IL/Alton) and the game went into overtime.
Both teams had a good scoring chance in extra time, with Hohenstein stopping a shot by Jones with seconds remaining in the first overtime and Hebert holding off a shot by
Mike Scharf (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) in the final minute of the second extra period.
The Knights (5-7-2, 4-6-1 GLVC) had a 14-12 advantage in shots on the night; Hohenstein finished with six saves.
With top-ranked Rockhurst losing Friday to McKendree, the Miners are the only team left in the GLVC without a loss at 6-0-4 in conference play. S&T, 7-1-5 overall, remains in second place behind Rockhurst in the league standings with a winning percentage of .800 to the Hawks' .864.
The Miners and Southern Indiana (10-2-1, 8-2-1 GLVC), who also played to a tie on Friday at Drury, will play at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the S&T Soccer Field.
