ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T grabbed a two-goal lead in the first half Sunday, but allowed a pair of second half goals to 22
nd-ranked Southern Indiana and ended up playing to a
2-2 draw for the second time in three days in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
The Miners – who at 6-0-5 in GLVC play (7-1-6 overall) are still the only team in the conference without a loss in league play – dropped into third place in the standings with the tie on Sunday after Missouri-St. Louis knocked off Saint Joseph's. Only two games separate first place, currently held by Rockhurst, from fifth place in the GLVC.
With the wind at its back in the first 45 minutes on a breezy afternoon, S&T took the lead in the sixth minute when
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) drilled a free kick into the upper left corner past USI goalkeeper Adam Zehme. The Miners added to their advantage just over seven minutes later when
Mitch Morris (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) sent a ball into the box that
Will McIntyre (Queenstown, New Zealand) headed home to make it 2-0.
The Miners took that 2-0 advantage to halftime, but with the wind at their backs in the second half, the Screaming Eagles wasted little time in cutting the lead in half.
S&T cleared out a free kick, but USI played the ball back and Morgan Kelly headed Justin Brooks' feed past S&T goalkeeper
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) just 2:49 into the period to make it 2-1.
The Miners were able to hold off the repeated attacks by USI during the second half following the goal – a half where the Eagles had a 10-2 advantage in shots – but in the 75
th minute, the visitors drew even when Eric Ramirez got free in front of the net and scored.
In overtime, the Eagles (10-2-2, 8-2-2 GLVC) had the only shot of the first overtime period and S&T had a 3-2 edge in the final 10 minutes; USI had a 19-11 advantage for the game.
Hohenstein finished with five saves for S&T, who played in a school record sixth draw of the season and tied the GLVC record for ties in a year with five that was set by Quincy in 2012.
Missouri S&T will S&T will play Saint Joseph's at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the S&T Soccer Field.
