ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T got off to a fast start Wednesday afternoon and was able to finish off Saint Joseph's around a weather delay as the Miners picked up a 4-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over the Pumas at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
The Miners, who are ranked sixth in the first NCAA Division II Midwest regional rankings that were released while the game was in progress Wednesday (see below), got two goals from the GLVC's top goal scorer,
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), in the first five minutes and never trailed to improve to 8-1-6 overall and 7-0-5 in conference play.
Andrade scored his first goal when he got a pass from
Will McIntyre (Queenstown, New Zealand) and hit a shot from the wing past Puma goalkeeper Adam Whybrow just 3:49 into play. Just 22 seconds later, Andrade struck again when Tobi Beck fed him a pass into the box and he rifled it past Whybrow to make it 2-0.
With the two tallies to give him 12 for the season, Andrade became the first Miner since 2003 to score at least a dozen goals in a season. The span of 22 seconds between the two was just four shy of the school record for the shortest time between two goals.
Saint Joseph's drew to within a goal in the 14
th minute when the Miners were unable to clear a ball out from in front of the net; Peter Munro put it in to make it 2-1. But the Miners answered back a little over seven minutes later, as
Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla) headed in
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik)'s long free kick to give S&T a 3-1 lead it would take to halftime.
After nearly 13 minutes of the second half had been played, the contest went into a weather delay for nearly 90 minutes, then once play resumed, the Miners got their fourth goal when
Neil Wiaranowski (Naperville, IL/Naperville North) tallied his first of the year when he headed in a cross from Andrade.
With more weather approaching the area, the game was called after it became official at the 70-minute mark.
The Miners and Pumas (1-13, 1-11 GLVC), who were making up a game that had been postponed due to weather in September, had 10 shots apiece in the contest.
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) finished with one save for S&T.
Missouri S&T will face William Jewell Friday in a 7:30 p.m. contest in Liberty, Mo.
Miners at No. 6 in first regional rankings
The NCAA released its first set of regional rankings Wednesday and Missouri S&T finds itself sixth in the Midwest region.
The Miners will face two of the teams above them in their final three regular season contests, as they will host the region's top-ranked team, Rockhurst, Sunday and close the regular season slate next Wednesday at Drury, who is ranked third.
Southern Indiana, whom the Miners tied on Sunday, is second in the region, while Missouri-St. Louis, whom S&T beat 3-1 last month is behind Drury in the fourth spot. The leader in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Saginaw Valley State, is right above the Miners in fifth, while two more GLIAC teams, Tiffin and Northwood, are seventh and eighth, respectively.
Missouri S&T's only loss this season came to Lindenwood, who is the top-ranked team in the Central region this week.
The NCAA will release two more sets of regional rankings on each of the next two Wednesdays prior to the official announcement of the regional field on Nov. 7.
