LIBERTY, Mo. – Missouri S&T got a first half goal from
Will McIntyre (Queenstown, New Zealand), a shutout in goal from
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) and as a result, a
1-0 win Friday at William Jewell that has set up a Sunday showdown between the top two teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The Miners' win Friday over the Cardinals, coupled with Missouri-St. Louis' loss at Truman State, moved S&T back into second place in the GLVC standings with two games left on the schedule. And next up for S&T – fifth-ranked Rockhurst, whom the Miners (9-1-6, 8-0-5 GLVC) will host Sunday in a 2:30 p.m. contest at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
A win on Sunday by S&T would move it even with the Hawks atop the league standings, while a win or a tie would clinch a home game for the Miners in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament.
In Friday's game, S&T put pressure on the Cardinals right from the opening kickoff as it got off six shots in the first 14-plus minutes of play and scored on the last of those six, as McIntyre got a pass from
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and put a shot by Cardinal goalkeeper Luke Heaton.
The Miners got only three more shots over the balance of the first half as they outshot the Cardinals 9-3 in the first half.
Hohenstein, who recorded his sixth shutout of the season, turned away the only two shots William Jewell got on goal in the contest, one by Rolla native Aaron Froehlich in the first half and the other by Ethan Delaney in the early stages of the second half.
The Cardinals (2-12-1, 2-10-1 GLVC) did not have a shot on net in the final 38 minutes of play. Missouri S&T had a 13-5 advantage in shots in the game.
