Miners best #5 Rockhurst to draw even atop GLVC standings

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team picked up a huge win – in more ways than one – Sunday afternoon by knocking off fifth-ranked Rockhurst 3-1 on Senior Day at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Sunday's win brought the Miners into a tie for first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference on a percentage basis, as S&T improved to 9-0-5 in the GLVC (a winning percentage of .821, which is the same as Rockhurst who owns an 11-2-1 league mark) with one game left on the conference slate for both teams.

In addition, S&T, who was ranked sixth in the NCAA Division II Midwest region this week, got a win over the region's top-ranked squad in a week where each of the top four teams in the region either took a loss or played to a tie.

Finally, the win -- which extended the Miners' unbeaten streak to a season-high nine games -- allowed S&T to clinch a first round home game in the GLVC Tournament that will begin next Sunday.

In Sunday's hotly contested match, one where the Hawks would have clinched the regular season title with a win, it was the Miners who drew first blood in the 13th minute of play when Neil Wiaranowski (Naperville, IL/Naperville North) took a shot in the middle of a scramble in front of the net and the ball went just over the goal line inside the right post.

The shot was not ruled a goal initially on the field, but after the center referee conferred with the assistant referee, the play was ruled a goal to give S&T the lead.

Just 1:18 later, Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla) got free on the left side of the box and hit a shot from about 10 yards away past Hawk goalkeeper Logan Feldmann to double the S&T advantage.

Following the second Miner goal, Rockhurst began to ramp up its offensive pressure and cut the S&T lead in half when Brian O'Neal had his initial shot blocked in front, but got the ball back and hit one past Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) in the 37th minute.

Rockhurst (13-2-1) outshot S&T 9-8 in the first half and continued to fire shots throughout the second half, but only three of the Hawks' 11 efforts in the final 45 minutes were on goal.

In the 85th minute, the Miners got a huge insurance goal when Parks got a pass from Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) down the left side of the field and went one-on-one with a defender and hit a shot from the top of the box by Feldmann to give S&T its two-goal lead again, which it protected over the final 5:08 of play.

Hohenstein made four saves in goal for the Miners (10-1-6 overall) to help them pick up their first win over a top-10 team since beating top-ranked Northern Kentucky in 2011.

The Miners will close their GLVC schedule Wednesday when they face Drury in a 7:30 p.m. game in Springfield, Mo.
