SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri S&T's hopes of capturing a share of the Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season title fell short Wednesday night, as Drury handed the Miners a
3-0 loss at Harrison Stadium.
The loss ended the 16
th-ranked Miners' unbeaten streak at nine games and was the first in the conference season for S&T, who would have gained a share of the GLVC regular season championship with a victory. Instead, the Miners (10-2-6, 9-1-5 GLVC) will head into the conference tournament as the second seed and will face seventh-seeded Indianapolis Sunday at 2 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field.
S&T entered the night tied with Rockhurst, who took the crown with its 3-0 win at William Jewell.
The Panthers (11-3-3, 9-3-3 GLVC), who secured a home game in the opening round of the tournament with the win, got a pair of first half goals from Antoine Vial, the first coming on a free kick from about 35 yards away midway through the period when he hit a shot into the upper left corner.
Vial's second goal, in the 35
th minute, came when he got to a ball that came loose out in front of the net and put it by
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) to put S&T into a two-goal deficit for only the second time this season.
S&T had a pair of good scoring chances in the first nine minutes of the second half, first after getting a free kick opportunity right outside the box and moments later when a shot by
Bryce Johnson (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt South) hit the post.
However, in the 64
th minute, Vial was fouled in the box and converted the penalty kick that followed to complete a hat trick and give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
The Miners were held to six shots in the contest as the Panthers outshot S&T 12-6 in the game. Andrade and
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) had two shots apiece for the Miners, while Hohenstein made two saves in goal.
Miners move up in NCAA-II Midwest Regional Rankings
Earlier on Wednesday, Missouri S&T moved up three spots in the NCAA Division II Midwest regional rankings to third following a three-win week that included a victory over the region's top-ranked team, Rockhurst.
The Hawks, whom the Miners beat 3-1 Sunday, remained at the top of the list but plenty of changes took place after that. Saginaw Valley State and the Miners both moved up three spots, with Saginaw Valley State going to second and S&T to third. Southern Indiana is ranked fourth this week, followed by Tiffin and Northwood from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The top six teams will go to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Quincy and Drury held the seventh and eighth spots, respectively, in this week's regional ranking.
