LEBANON, Ill. – For the third straight year, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team found some late game magic to pull out a win over McKendree, as
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) scored in the 81
st minute of play to give the Miners a
1-0 road victory over the Bearcats Friday night.
The victory keeps S&T unbeaten in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at the midway point of its conference schedule at 5-0-3 and improves its overall record to 6-1-4 on the year heading into Sunday's contest at Illinois Springfield.
With just over nine minutes remaining in regulation time, the Miners were given a free kick opportunity from near their bench about 25 yards from the end line. Ulfarsson shot it at the goal and as a pair of Miners converged on the ball, it went past them – but also by McKendree goalkeeper Eddie Starr into the lower left corner to break the tie.
Both had golden opportunities prior to that to get the lead, as S&T's
Will McIntyre (Queenstown, New Zealand) hit a shot off the post in the 68
th minute and McKendree's Ethan Mayberry headed a ball off the crossbar 10 minutes later.
The Miners held off a flurry in front of the net following a corner kick with over five minutes remaining, but it would turn out to be the final shot the Bearcats (2-4-2, 1-4-2 GLVC) would get in the contest.
S&T held an 11-10 advantage in shots for the game, as Miner goalkeeper
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) recorded his fifth shutout of the season.
The Miners and UIS will face off at 2:30 p.m., Sunday in Springfield, Ill.
