St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Miners made a valiant effort but its comeback came up a couple of points short as it fell at Missouri-St. Louis 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. The loss snapped S&T's two match winning streak and dropped them to 5-9 and 2-4 in the GLVC.
The Miners led for a majority of the opening set and at one point built an 18-10 advantage before the Tritons (9-4, 4-2 GLVC) rallied with an 11-2 run to take their first lead of the set. The two sides swapped points but it was UMSL who was the first to get to set point on a kill by Gina Pezze. Neither side could close the other out as they were answering each other point for point. S&T held leads of 31-30 and 32-31 but were unable to put the frame away as the Tritons tallied the final three points to take the opener 34-32.
The Miners overcame a three point deficit in the second stanza to take a brief 15-14 lead after a kill by
Caroline Dykes (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence). It was one of five kills that Dykes had in the frame. UMSL responded scoring five of the next seven points to regain the lead. The lead grew to 22-19 but S&T battled back to within 22-21 but were unable to overtake the Tritons as they scored the final three points of the frame to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
The Miner defense stepped up big in set three holding the UMSL to a negative .047 hitting percentage and recorded two blocks in the frame.
Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) led S&T with four kills in the frame while
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) contributed three kills. S&T led by as many as seven in the frame and was able to hold off a late rally to extend the match.
The Tritons were poised to end the match in set four building a seven point lead midway through the frame but the Miners fought back with an 8-1 run behind five kills from Friedlund to even the set at 19. UMSL answered right back scoring four in a row and were on the verge of winning the match with four match points before S&T rattled off six straight points to force the fifth and deciding set. Dykes had a kill and a service ace in the run while Talley added a pair of kills.
In the finale the Tritons built a two-point lead four different times but were unable to put the Miners away as they answered each time. Trailing 12-11, Friedlund tied it up with a kill and then on the next point Dykes and
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) blocked Morgan Childers at the net to give S&T a 13-12 lead. The Miners were unable to close it out though as UMSL scored the final three points of the match to win 15-13.
Talley led four S&T players in double figures with 20 kills. Dykes and Friedlund had 14 kills each and
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) added 10 kills. White finished with 55 assists while
Cydney Denning (San Antonio, Texas/Brandeis ) had 21 digs. The Miners finished the match with a .201 hitting percentage.
Selena Nolte led four Tritons in double figures with 16 kills. Kylie Rudsinski had 11 kills while Childers and Lexi Rogers had 10 kills each. Madyson Abeyta dished out 30 assists and Danielle Waedekin had a match high 31 digs. UMSL finished the match with an attack percentage of .195.
S&T concludes its five game roadtrip on Tuesday traveling to Springfield, Mo., to take on Drury at 7 p.m.
