Foster’s goal lifts Lady Miners to 1-0 win over Maryville

Rolla, Mo. –
Kayla Foster (Sand Springs, Okla./Charles Page)'s goal in the 76th minute lifted the Missouri S&T Lady Miners to a 1-0 win over Maryville on Sunday and also snapped S&T's five game losing streak. The Lady Miners (2-6, 2-5 GLVC) outshot the Saints (4-6, 3-5 GLVC) 15-12 for the contest.

The game was a physical contest with 34 combined fouls and three yellow cards. Maryville had the better of the scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes despite being outshot 5-4. The Saints put two of their chances on goal but Karen Nightingale (Ellisville, Mo./Marquette) made a couple of big saves to keep the game scoreless.

S&T broke through with less than 15 minutes left in the game as Anna Fink (Fulton, Mo./Fulton) cleared a ball towards midfield. Sarah Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) flicked the ball ahead to Foster who beat her defender and fired a shot low and to the goalkeeper's right. The keeper got a piece of it but not enough to prevent it from going into the net for Foster's third goal of the season.

The Saints turned up the pressure in the final 10 minutes looking for the equalizer but the Lady Miner defense held strong to pick up its first shutout of the season. Nightingale made five saves in goal to pick up her first career shutout.

S&T outshot Maryville 10-8 in the second half but the Saints had three shots on goal to two for the Lady Miners. Foster led S&T with four shots and put two of those goal. Allison Verville took a game-high six shots and put two of those on goal.

The Lady Miners are back in action on Friday when they travel to Lebanon, Ill., to take on McKendree at 5 p.m.
