Lady Miners come up short against Indianapolis 60-56

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners got off to a good start on Saturday shooting 67 percent in the first quarter before going cold over the final three quarters in a 60-56 loss to Indianapolis on Saturday. The loss dropped the Lady Miners to 5-9, 1-6 GLVC and was their fifth straight.

Indianapolis (4-12, 2-4 GLVC) scored the first points of the game on a three-pointer by Sarah Costello but S&T rallied with an 18-5 run and had a 10-point lead with 0:34 left in the opening quarter after a layup by Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia). The Greyhounds cut the lead to seven on a three-pointer by Princess German in the closing seconds of the quarter.
In the second quarter the Lady Miners struggled to get going offensively scoring three points in the first eight minutes of the stanza. The Hounds took advantage as German took over scoring nine points in the quarter. S&T held a two-point lead but German hit a three-pointer with 0:06 left in the half to give Indianapolis a 26-25 lead at the break.

The Lady Miners shot 45.5 percent (10-for-22) from the floor, 2-of-5 from three and 3-for-4 at the foul line. Arand led S&T with nine points while Bria Pierce (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) and Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) had four points each.
German led all scorers with 12 first half points while Nicole Anderson added eight. The Greyhounds were 8-of-22 (36.4 percent) from the field, shot 33 percent from downtown and was 5-for-5 at the line.

The first four minutes of the third quarter was back-and-forth affair as the two sides kept trading leads. Pierce gave the Lady Miners a 32-31 lead after making 1-of-2 at the foul line with 7:14 to go. That would be the last lead of the game for S&T as German was fouled on the ensuing possession and hit two free throws to give the Hounds the lead back sparking an 11-0 run.

The lead grew to 13 points before a pair of free throws by Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) with 0:04 left in the quarter cut the lead to 11 at the quarter break.

The Lady Miners came out strong in the fourth quarter scoring the first eight points to cutting the lead to 47-44 with 6:29 left in the game. They had a chance to cut into the lead but missed four straight shots including three on one possession which could've cut it to a one-point game.

The Greyhounds scored six of the next 10 points over a 3:30 stretch to build a seven-point lead with 61 seconds remaining. Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to cut the margin to four with 0:56 left.

Devin Ferguson hit 1-of-2 at the line for Indy to stretch the margin back to five but J. Douvier hit a layup with 0:29 to go to make it a one possession game. Forced to foul the Lady Miners sent German to the line where she hit 1-of-2 to make it 57-53 with 0:23 left. S&T cut the lead to one as Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ) hit a layup and was fouled with 0:10 left and hit the free throw to make it a one point game.

The Lady Miners had to foul again and sent Anderson to the line who hit 1-of-2 to give S&T a chance but Gray was called for a double dribble with 2.4 seconds left and then Costello hit two free throws to ice the game.

The Lady Miners finished the game shooting 37 percent (18-for-49) from the field, went 3-of-10 from beyond the arc but did shot nearly 90 percent at the foul line. Arand and Pierce led S&T with 13 points apiece while J. Douvier had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Defensively the Lady Miners struggled to contain German, Anderson and Costello who entering Saturday had accounted for 75 percent of Indianapolis's offense. The trio combined for 53 of the team's 60 points in the game and German led all scorers with 27 points. Costello dropped in 14 and Anderson finished with 12. The Hounds shot 33 percent (16-for-48) from the field, 9-of-33 from the perimeter and 73 percent at the foul line (19-for-26). Indianapolis outscored S&T 19-12 in points off turnovers and 11-4 in second chance points.

The Lady Miners are back in action this coming Thursday traveling to Liberty, Mo., to take on William Jewell in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
