Liberty, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners snapped a five game losing streak behind a balanced scoring attack defeating William Jewell
71-62 on Thursday at the Mabee Center in Liberty, Mo. In addition, S&T snapped a three-game overall losing streak against the Cardinals and a three-game losing streak at the Mabee Center.
The Lady Miners (6-9, 2-6 GLVC) went on a 14-2 run spanning 3:30 in the opening quarter to take an early eight point lead. That lead quickly disappeared as William Jewell (7-12, 2-6 GLVC) outscored S&T 11-2 in the final 4:35 to take a 17-16 lead into the quarter break.
The lead changed hands six times over the first five-plus minutes of the second quarter. The Lady Miners trailed 31-29 with 4:30 left in the opening half when
Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) hit a layup to tie the game sparking a 9-0 run.
Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) added a jumper and then
Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ) scored the final five points of the half for S&T putting them up 38-31 with 1:15 left in the stanza.
The Lady Miners had a chance to extend their lead right before the half but missed a three-pointer and the Cardinals Megan Paul hit a three-pointer in the final seconds of the half to cut the lead to 38-34 at the break.
S&T shot 52 percent (16-for-31) from the floor in the first two quarters, was 3-of-10 from downtown but was outrebounded 20-18. The Lady Miners finished the half with nine assists against four turnovers. Gray and
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) led S&T with eight points apiece while J. Douvier and
Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) had six points each.
William Jewell shot only 39 percent (14-of-36) from the field, was only 4-for-15 from beyond the arc and shot 33 percent at the foul line. Paul led the Cardinals with nine points while Madison Campbell added eight.
The Lady Miners opened the second half with a 7-2 run building a 45-36 lead 2:30 into the third quarter. William Jewell countered with six straight to cut the lead to three points and had a chance to get closer but missed three shots and two free throws in a two-minute stretch.
S&T capitalized on the missed opportunities as J. Douvier hit a layup and then
Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) buried a three-pointer from the top of the key to extend the lead back to eight points. The Cardinals cut the lead to six after a basket by Chris Keys, but another bucket from J. Douvier and a free throw by Bland gave the Lady Miners a 53-44 lead heading into the final period.
WJC came out strong to begin the fourth quarter cutting the lead to 53-49 before
Bria Pierce (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) scored five straight points extending the lead back to nine. The lead eventually grew to 65-54 after two free throws from Gray but the Cardinals scored seven straight to cut the lead to four with 3:00 left in the contest.
After a Gray free throw made it 66-61, William Jewell had a chance to make it a one possession game but Logan Antenen made only 1-of-2 at the line to keep the margin at four points. That would be the final point the Cardinals scored as S&T put the game away on back-to-back layups by J. Douvier and a free throw from Greenwood to seal the victory.
The Lady Miners finished the game shooting 48.1 percent (26-for-54) from the floor and had four players reach double figures in scoring led by Gray with 15. J. Douvier added 14 while Arand had 11 and Pierce finished with 10. S&T outrebounded the Cardinals 20-17 in the second half to finish with 38-to-37 edge on the glass.
William Jewell was held to just 34 percent shooting was 6-for-28 from the perimeter and made only 60 percent of its attempts at the foul line. Maddie Nelson led the Cardinals with 14 points while Paul and Campbell had 12 points each.
The Lady Miners return to action on Saturday afternoon taking on Rockhurst at 1 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo. The Hawks lost to Drury 82-64 on Thursday.
