ROLLA, Mo. – A red-hot first half by Indianapolis set the pace Saturday afternoon as the Greyhounds handed Missouri S&T a
98-82 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss at Billy Key Court.
UIndy, ranked 20
th in the latest NABC/Division II coaches poll, made 15 of its first 18 shots from the floor Saturday and finished the first half shooting 67.9 percent from the floor. The hot shooting continued into the early stages of the second half as well, as the Greyhounds built its lead to as many as 28 points before the midway point.
S&T trailed 7-6 following a jumper by
B.J. McLaughlin (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) at the 16:41 mark, but UIndy rattled off nine straight points to take a 10-point lead a little over two minutes later. Following baskets by
Tyler Anderson (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit North) and
Allen Billinger (Carbondale, Ill./Carbondale), the Greyhounds then went on a 10-0 run to build a 16-point advantage after a fast break lay-in by Tyler Rambo.
The Greyhounds would lead by as many as 19 in the opening half and held a 51-36 lead at the break.
UIndy began to extend the margin about four minutes into the second half, outscoring the Miners 14-4 over a four-minute stretch to go up by 26 and eventually were up by 28 by the 10:36 mark. S&T cut into the lead over the final five minutes, largely behind the shooting of
Desmond Buerge (Carthage, Mo./Carthage) as he scored 20 of his career-high 24 points in the second half.
Buerge was eight-of-10 from the floor and made three of his four three-point attempts in the final 20 minutes of play. He was joined in double figures by
Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights) and McLaughlin, who finished with 12 points apiece.
Miller also had eight assists to match his career best in that department for the second game in succession.
Missouri S&T shot 47.8 percent on the afternoon and turned the ball over just seven times, but were unable to slow the Greyhounds as they finished the day at 59.7 percent from the floor and held a 37-26 advantage on the boards.
Jimmy King scored 16 points off the bench to lead the Greyhounds (11-3, 5-1 GLVC), while Alex Etherington and Rambo finished with 14 apiece.
The Miners (7-9, 3-4 GLVC) return to the floor Thursday when they face William Jewell in a 7:30 p.m. contest in Liberty, Mo.
