ROLLA, Mo. – A game of runs saw Saint Joseph's make the decisive one late in the second half, as the Pumas knocked off Missouri S&T in a high scoring affair
101-94 Thursday night at Billy Key Court.
The Pumas torched the nets at a 65.5 percent clip on Thursday and outscored S&T 21-12 down the stretch after the Miners had taken a two-point lead with under seven minutes remaining.
S&T got off to a hot start, reaching the 30-point mark in the first eight minutes of play. A 10-0 spurt, starting with two free throws from
Tyler Anderson (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit North) and culminating with a three-pointer by
Danylo Zuikov (Kiev, Ukraine/LaLumiere School), gave the Miners a 30-22 lead.
The Miners continued to hold onto the advantage over the next six minutes and led 41-37 following
Desmond Buerge (Carthage, Mo./Carthage)'s dunk at the 6:23 mark. However, the Miners were also beginning to stagnate on the offensive end at that point and the Pumas took control of matters for the balance of the half.
Beginning with a basket by Devone Daniels with 4:56 to play, Saint Joseph's outscored the Miners 19-2 to close the first half of play. S&T was within a point at 44-43 following two
Telloy Simon (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's) free throws with 2:54 remaining, but the Pumas scored the final 12 points of the period to take a 13-point lead to the locker room.
Saint Joseph's would extend that lead to as much as 16 early in the second half before the Miners began carving into the margin. Down by 10 with 11:11 to go, S&T embarked on a 10-0 run to tie the score at 73 on
B.J. McLaughlin (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central)'s dunk. Dawson Gore hit two free throws to put the Pumas back in the lead, only to see the Miners bounce back and eventually regain the lead at 79-78 on a three-point basket by Zuikov.
Jordan Seele's dunk put Saint Joseph's back into the lead on the next trip down the floor, but S&T got another three-pointer from Zuikov to go up by two with 6:42 to play. The Pumas responded with baskets from Seele and Davious Webster on a put-back with 5:56 remaining – a basket that as it turned out, put Saint Joseph's up to stay.
Starting with the Seele jumper that tied the game, the Pumas scored on six consecutive possessions, including a three-pointer by Gore that extended the lead to six with 4:18 left after a pair of missed free throws by S&T that would have cut the lead to one..
The Pumas scored on 11 of their final 13 possessions to send the Miners to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while improving to 8-7 and 3-2 in the GLVC.
Zuikov led five Miners in double figures with a season-high 18 points, while Buerge and Simon scored 14 apiece. S&T also got 11 points from
Rokas Paulauskas (Talsiai, Lithuania/Hamilton Heights Acad.) and 10 from
Zach Ellis (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) off the bench.
Saint Joseph's hit 65.5 percent of its shots on the night -- the best mark this season against S&T -- and was led by CJ Hardaway with 19 points and Nick Jeffirs with 18. Webster also finished with 16 points and Seele added 15 off the bench.
The Miners will host 20
th-ranked Indianapolis Saturday in a 3 p.m. contest at Billy Key Court. The Greyhounds (10-3, 4-1 GLVC) were upended 77-65 Thursday for their first loss in GLVC play.
