Julie Bride (Stilwell, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas)'s goal in the 28
th minute proved to be the difference in Missouri S&T's
1-0 win over Missouri Southern on Saturday evening at the Curry Sports Complex in Springfield, Mo. With the victory the Lady Miners evened their record at 1-1 while the Lions fell to 0-2.
The game winning goal was setup by a long pass from
Riley Cronin (Albuquerque, N. M./Sandia Prep) in the defensive half of the field that Bride ran onto down the right sideline. Bride dribbled the ball to the edge of the penalty box and lofted a shot over the outstretched arm of the goalkeeper.
Each side took three shots apiece while S&T put two on target to just one for MSSU.
The Lady Miners tried to add to its lead in the 70
th minute as
Lauren Tolan (Columbia, Ill./Columbia) tried to rip a header past the keeper but Shawnee Phillips made a diving save to prevent the insurance goal.
The Lions threatened late, but the S&T defense stood tall not letting them get anything in close against
Carrie Levy (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge ) who made four saves to pick up her first career shutout.
The Lady Miners outshot Missouri Southern 7-6 and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
S&T opens Great Lakes Valley Conference at Rockhurst this coming Friday at 5 p.m.
