No. 21 RiverHawks rally in second half to knock off Miners

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team led for much of the afternoon Sunday against 21st-ranked Northeastern State, but a pair of goals just over two minutes apart in the second half allowed the RiverHawks to rally for a 2-1 victory over the Miners.

S&T broke on top 9:32 into the game on a counterattack that led to a goal from Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) from close range.  After the Miner took that lead, the RiverHawks went on an assault on the offensive end, firing four shots on net over the next eight minutes – but all of those tries were turned away.

The Miners would take that 1-0 lead to the intermission.

Play continued to go back and forth during the first 25 minutes of the second half, before the RiverHawks tied the game and then took the lead on two goals by Trevor Reed 2:19 apart.

Reed's first goal came on a shot from the wing that slipped through the hands of S&T goalkeeper Nick Posey (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) with 17:41 remaining, then he scored again moments later when he dribbled through the Miner defense and beat Posey inside the left post.

The Miners had a good scoring change with under four minutes remaining on a shot in the box by Andrade, but that was turned away by NSU goalkeeper Eric Shephard.

Northeastern State (2-0) outshot the Miners (0-2) 17-11 in the game, as Posey finished with five saves in goal for S&T.  Andrade had two of the Miners' six shots on net.

The Miners head back to the road Friday to open their Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule as they take on Rockhurst in a 7:30 p.m. contest in Kansas City, Mo.
