KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A great defensive effort by Missouri S&T ended in disappointment, as a goal by Claudio Romano with 1:51 left in regulation time gave Rockhurst a
1-0 win over the Miners in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.
Moments after the Miners were called for a hand ball nearly 40 yards away from their own goal, Romano got a head on the free kick about six yards in front of the S&T net to break the deadlock.
S&T had a late chance to tie the contest when it first got a corner kick with under 30 seconds to go, then had a shot from outside the box go off a Rockhurst defender just before the clock expired.
The game was scoreless at halftime with the Miners getting the better scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes. S&T was turned away on a pass to the front of the net that the Hawks cleared out, then shots on net by Brody Bouillion and
David Murphy (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) were stopped by Hawk goalkeeper Logan Feldmann.
Rockhurst's best scoring chance in the first came with around 11 minutes to play, but Mitch Moncada's shot from around 20 yards away was blocked by the S&T defense.
The Hawks had a golden opportunity to take the lead 12 minutes into the second half, but S&T goalkeeper
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) stoned Adam Michel at point blank range to keep the contest scoreless. S&T got a chance of its own on a free kick just outside the box with 25 minutes to go after a run through the defense by
Matt Kilwin (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade College Prep), but that was turned away by the Hawks.
The Miners got another chance after a Hawk turnover deep in its own end, but
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik)'s shot was stopped by Feldmann with 17 minutes remaining.
With just over seven minutes left, the Miners averted a disaster when Posey tried to play up the field that was the stolen by the Hawks, but he got a foot on Panarisi's shot attempt.
Missouri S&T (0-3, 0-1 GLVC) was outshot 12-4 by the Hawks (1-0-1, 1-0 GLVC) in the second half and 12-7 for the contest, but had four shots on net to the Hawks' three. Posey was credited with two saves in goal for the Miners.
The Miners will open their home schedule Sunday when they take on William Jewell at 2:30 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field. The Cardinals (0-2, 0-1 GLVC) lost their GLVC opener Friday to Drury 2-0.
