ROLLA, Mo. – A second half burst put the Miners into the win column for the first time in the 2015 season Sunday afternoon, as Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) scored twice in a span of 2:15 to propel the Miners to a 3-1 win over William Jewell at the S&T Soccer Field.
Andrade broke a 1-1 tie when Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) led him into a one-on-one breakaway against Cardinal goalkeeper Joe Keeven and beat him to his left to put the Miners into the lead with 19 minutes remaining.
Moments later, Andrade scored again when the Miners moved the ball around at the top of the box and he took a pass from Maxi Fuchs (Munich, Germany) and drilled a shot from about 12 yards away into the back of the net.
William Jewell took the initial lead in the contest at the 11:54 mark when Rolla native Aaron Froehlich had a shot blocked by the Miner defense, but the rebound went right to Ethan Delaney who proceeded to hit a shot past S&T goalkeeper Nick Posey (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville).
S&T came to life during the final 15 minutes of the first half and drew even with 2:39 to play before halftime. Ryan Lawhead (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) took the ball down the left sideline and fed it to Abichabki in the middle of the field, where he took a shot from the top of the box that slipped through the hands of Keeven and past the goal line.
The Miners outshot the Cardinals (0-3, 0-2 GLVC) 17-15 in the contest, but only three of William Jewell's 15 attempts were on net. Posey finished with two saves, while Keeven ended up with five.
Missouri S&T (1-3, 1-1 GLVC) will hit the road Friday to take on Southern Indiana in a 7:30 p.m. contest in Evansville, Ind.
