Rolla, Mo. - The Missouri S&T volleyball team continues its seven match homestand on Tuesday night with a non-conference match against Missouri Western at 6 p.m. It'll be the start of a busy week as the Miners will then host Maryville on Friday night at 7 p.m., take on Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and Southern Arkansas at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.
S&T looks to extend its overall winning streak to three and its home winning streak to four when it hosts Missouri Western on Tuesday. The Miners had a good weekend on both sides of the ball hitting .275 percent while averaging 14.3 kills per set while on the defensive side of the ball they held the opposition to a .102 hitting percentage and finished the weekend with 17 total blocks and 16.1 digs per set.
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic),
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) and
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) led the offense with each averaging at least three kills per set. Moon and Haslag combined for 38 kills over the weekend and hit a blistering 46 percent.
On the defensive side of the ball
Jackie Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) continued her strong play averaging 5.29 digs per set as she extended her streak of double figure dig totals to 21 straight matches dating back to last season. She had 14 digs against Saint Joseph's and followed that up with 23 against Indianapolis.
Haslag finished the weekend with 10 total blocks while
Claire Luther (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) had seven blocks and Moon added five.
Missouri Western enters Tuesday's match having won 10 straight after starting the season 0-2. Since its loss at Ferris State the Griffons have won 30 of their last 34 sets and have swept four of their last five opponents. MWSU opened Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play last weekend with sweeps at home over Missouri Southern and Southwest Baptist.
As a team, the Griffons are averaging 13 kills/set and have an attack percentage of .234. Jessie Thorup leads the offense with 3.74 kills per set while Shellby Taylor is averaging 2.23 kills a set. Jordan Chohon is the primary setter averaging 10.5 assists/set and Kayla Ruff has dug up 192 attacks and is averaging 4.47 digs/set.
Tuesday's match is also Military Appreciation Night. Anyone who shows a military ID will be granted free admission.
Maryville enters this week with a record of 5-7 overall and 1-3 in GLVC action after dropping two home matches to Lewis 3-1 and Wisconsin-Parkside 3-0 this past weekend. The Saints play host to Oakland City on Thursday evening before their conference matches this weekend.
Maryville is averaging 11.7 kills per set and has an attack percentage of .181 while giving up 12.3 kills a set and are allowing its opponents to hit .195 percent. Ashley Selman, Maddie Timmermann and Laura Welling are leading the Saints attack averaging 2.59 kills/set, 2.54 kills/set and 2.20 kills/set respectively. Taryn Trubich is the primary setter averaging over eight assists per set while Ali Lampen is the leader on the defensive side of the ball with 4.37 digs/set.
Missouri-St. Louis also enters this week with record of 5-7 overall but are 2-2 in the GLVC. The Tritons split a pair of home matches last weekend sweeping past Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday and then fell to Lewis in four sets on Saturday. UMSL hosts Lindenwood in a non-conference match on Tuesday before heading to Drury on Friday.
The Tritons average 12.4 kills per set and have an attack percentage of .177 while allowing their opponents to average over 14 kills per set and a .223 hitting percentage. Gina Pezze and Maddy Russell lead the UMSL attack averaging 2.80 and 2.70 kills per set respectively. Hannah Miller and Carly Ochs are also averaging over two kills per set. Lindsay Meyer is the primary setter averaging nearly seven assists per set while Alivia Brinker and Olivia Gillum are averaging 4.92 and 4.74 digs per set respectively.
Southern Arkansas enters play this week with a record of 6-7 and will play a pair of conference matches on Tuesday and Wednesday against Arkansas-Monticello and Harding before heading to Rolla on Saturday to take on Missouri-St. Louis and S&T in a tri-match.
The Lady Muleriders are hitting .204 as a team and averaging 12.6 kills/set. They've held their opposition to just a .188 hitting percentage and 11.5 kills per set. Serena LeDuff leads the offense with an average of 3.51 kills per set while Shelby Lauterbach and Alli O'Banion average 2.63 and 2.31 kills/set respectively. Rolla native Aarika Froehlich as appeared in four matches and is averaging one kill a set. Taylor Reaume is the primary setter averaging nearly 10 assists per set while Hannah Rice is the leader on the defensive side of the ball with nearly five digs per set.
Beginning this weekend the Miners will be raffling off the pink volleyballs used during all the October matches to raise money in the fight against breast cancer. The raffles will be held at every home match in October.
