Rolla, Mo. – In what turned out to be a very physical game the Missouri S&T Lady Miners played to a
1-1 double overtime draw against McKendree on Sunday afternoon at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. S&T (1-6-1, 0-5-1 GLVC) broke a scoreless drought of almost 300 minutes early in the first half.
The Lady Miners came out the aggressors controlling the first 20 minutes of play.
Julie Bride (Stilwell, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) had the game's first scoring chance in the 15
th minute but it was turned away. S&T got on the board almost 0:30 later when
Kendall Fitzpatrick (Houston, Texas/Memorial ) sent a corner kick into the box where
Morgan Sikora (Highland, Ill./Highland) was able to get a foot on it and put it in the back of the net.
The Bearcats (4-2-2, 3-2-1 GLVC) answered about 10 minutes when Cassie Kaiping ripped a shot from about 25 yards out off a feed from Alyssa Patterson.
The Lady Miners had a couple of opportunities following the equalizer to regain the lead.
Sarah Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) had a shot blocked and S&T had three corner kicks during that stretch. One of those corner kicks went off the keeper's hands but no one was on the back side to pounce on the loose ball.
McKendree took control over the final six minutes of the half taking five shots including two on goal but the defense stood tall blocking two shots and
Carrie Levy (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge ) made two saves.
The Bearcats outshot the Lady Miners 6-5 in the opening half and 3-2 in shots on goal. S&T had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Bride tried to give the Lady Miners the lead back about five minutes into the second half but her shot was saved by Taylor Zerbe.
Leah Camery (Anchorage, Alaska/Steller Secondary School) had a chance in the 79
th minute trying to head home a cross from
Lizzie Sanders (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) but it hit the far post and stayed out. On the ensuing loose ball
Rachel O'Neal (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) tried to punch it past Zerbe was able to keep it from crossing the line.
McKendree had a chance to regain the lead in the 83
rd minute off a free kick but Levy was able to handle Kaiping's chance to keep the game level. Chelsea Whittaker then tried to win the game in the final two minutes but once again Levy was able to make the save to force overtime.
The Bearcats outshot S&T 4-1 in the overtime periods but the Lady Miners had the only shot on goal as Bride tried to win the game in the 109
th minute. The S&T defense blocked three shots in the first overtime.
McKendree outshot S&T 15-9 but just 6-5 in shots on goal. The Bearcats also held a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.
Bride led the Lady Miners with four shots, three on goal while Sikora, Hostler, O'Neal, Fitzpatrick and Camery had a shot each. Levy made five saves.
S&T returns to action on Friday afternoon when it travels to Maryville University for a 4 p.m. contest against the Saints.
