St. Louis, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's soccer team dropped a
1-0 decision at Maryville on Friday afternoon. The Saints (5-3-1, 4-2-1 GLVC) scored midway through the first half off a corner kick.
Maryville came out the aggressors to begin the match getting a shot on goal within the first three minutes that
Carrie Levy (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge ) was able to turn it away. S&T (1-7-1, 0-6-1 GLVC) had a chance to get on the board in the sixth minute but
Lauren Tolan (Columbia, Ill./Columbia)'s header attempt was wide. The Saints put three more shots on frame but Levy was able to turn them away.
Maryville broke the scoreless deadlock in the 24
th minute as Amanda Wiechens headed home a corner kick from Nadia Abu-Douleh for her fifth goal of the season.
The Lady Miners tried to answer immediately following the goal but a shot by
Catherine Hawn (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) was wide and an attempt from
Kendall Fitzpatrick (Houston, Texas/Memorial ) sailed high.
The Saints outshot S&T 7-3 in the first 45 minutes and put five of those on goal.
Tolan tried to level the match in the 68
th minute but her attempt was saved by Bailey Doerflinger. The Lady Miners would get another chance seven minutes later but
Mikaela Mockenhaupt (Oswego, Ill./Oswego)'s shot sailed over the goal.
Maryville finished the contest with a 12-5 edge in shots and 6-5 in corner kicks.
Tolan led S&T with two shots while Hawn, Fitzpatrick and Mockenhaupt had one apiece. Levy made seven saves for the Lady Miners.
S&T returns to action on Sunday when it takes on Missouri-St. Louis beginning at 12 p.m. at Don Dallas Field on the Missouri-St. Louis campus.
