Lady Miners drop 1-0 decision to Illinois Springfield

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's soccer team dominated the stat sheet but still came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision against Illinois Springfield on Friday night at the S&T Soccer Field. S&T (1-6, 0-5 GLVC) outshot the Prairie Stars (3-4, 2-2 GLVC) 17-5 but couldn't find the back of the net as it hit the crossbar three times in the contest.

The Lady Miners came out the aggressors opening the game with three shots and two corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of play. Sarah Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) had a shot saved by Paige Polonus in the seventh minute and then Carli Tastad (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) hit the crossbar 11 minutes later.

After a couple of shots by UIS, S&T but another good string together  getting off three more shots and two more corner kicks in the next 20 minutes.

The Prairie Stars though would be the ones to crack the scoreboard in the closing seconds of the first half. The Stars got a corner kick with 0:24 left in the stanza and got it to Nikki Auble who passed it to the opposite side to Sam Morin who shot it inside the near post for second goal of the season.

The Lady Miners finished the opening 45 minutes with 7-4 edge in shots and 3-1 in shots on goal. They had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks as well.

S&T opened the second half aggressively as well looking to get an earlier equalizer. Julie Bride (Stilwell, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) hit the crossbar in the 56th minute and then about 10 minutes later the UIS defense blocked two shots and forced another wide.

Bride tried to tie the game again in the 67th minute but once again Polonus was there to turn it away.

The Lady Miners had a couple of chances late getting two corner kicks in the final three minutes but couldn't capitalize on either chance.

S&T outshot Illinois Springfield 10-1 in the second half and 2-1 in shots in goal. Bride, Leah Camery (Anchorage, Alaska/Steller Secondary School) and Mikaela Mockenhaupt (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) led the Lady Miners with three shots each. Hostler, Carli Tastad (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) and Taylor Vollmer (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) had two shots apiece.

S&T returns to action on Sunday hosting McKendree in a 12 p.m. contest at the S&T Soccer Field.
