Evansville, Ind. – Missouri S&T's women's soccer team dropped a
2-0 decision to Southern Indiana on Friday evening at Strassweg Field in Evansville, Ind. USI outshot the Lady Miners 14-12 in the contest, 8-5 in shots on goal.
S&T (1-4, 0-3 GLVC) came out the aggressors early in the contest registering three shots and getting a corner kick in the first seven minutes of the contest but it was the Screaming Eagles (3-1-1, 2-1 GLVC) who scored first as Kelsey Smith scored from the top of the box in the ninth minute. Gabriella Korte and Megan Herrington assisted on Smith's third goal of the season.
Andrea Aller (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley ) tried to even the game in the 20
th minute but her shot from the top of the box sailed high over the crossbar.
Sarah Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) had a chance late in the first half for an equalizer but her shot was saved by Emily Hopkins.
Carrie Levy (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge ) made three saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep it a one goal deficit at the break.
The shots were even 6-6 in the opening frame but USI had a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
The Eagles came out firing to begin the second half putting two shots on goal in the first three minutes but Levy turned them both away.
Lauren Tolan (Columbia, Ill./Columbia) tried to put S&T on the board in the 64
th minute but her shot from the right wing sailed high.
USI added to its lead in the 73
rd minute as Kennedy Moore scored off assists from Ryley Hancock and Carissa Dyer for her second of the season.
The Lady Miners turned up the heat in the final six minutes looking to get on the board as they registered four shots, two of which were on goal but were unable to get anything past Hopkins.
The Eagles outshot S&T 8-6 in the second half. The Lady Miners finished the contest with a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshmen
Lauren Tolan (Columbia, Ill./Columbia),
Andrea Aller (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley ) and
Carli Tastad (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) led S&T with three shots apiece with Aller putting two on goal. Levy finished the contest making six saves.
The Lady Miners return to the pitch on Sunday taking on Bellarmine University at 11 a.m. (CDT) in Louisville, Ky. The Knights defeated Drury 1-0 on Friday.
