Miners shut down in GLVC Tournament opener by Hawks

WESTFIELD, Ind. – Missouri S&T's offense was shut down by Quincy's Jake Peterson in the opening game of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Thursday, as the Hawks' lefthander threw a two-hitter and fanned 13 in a 5-0 decision in favor of the Hawks.

The loss puts the Miners into an elimination game later on Thursday against fifth-seeded Southern Indiana; the Screaming Eagles lost 7-2 to Truman State in its opening round game.

After S&T was retired in order in the first, the Hawks started out their half with three straight hits, the third of which off the bat of David Jacob drove in the first run of the contest.  Kory Wisdon, who had Quincy's second hit of the frame, scored moments later on a groundout by Ryan Snyder.

Jake Peterson mowed through the Miner lineup during the first three innings, recording seven strikeouts in that span without allowing a hit.  Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) got S&T's first hit in the contest with a one-out single in the fourth.

However, S&T did not get a runner to second base until the seventh, but Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) hit into a fielder's choice to end the threat.  The Miners got two on the eighth as well, but Peterson fanned Karbowski to escape that inning.

The Hawks (37-14), who outhit S&T 14-2, scored a single run in the fifth on Peter Cunningham's RBI single off losing pitcher Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield) and single tallies in the seventh and eighth innings for the final margin.

Karbowski had both of S&T's hits.   Bedsworth struck out four in six innings and allowed nine hits against the GLVC's top offensive team.
