Miners pick up non-league win by routing Bobcats

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T stepped outside of Great Lakes Valley Conference play Tuesday and picked up its second straight win by routing College of the Ozarks 14-0 at the S&T Baseball Field.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was called in the bottom of the first inning on account of weather.

S&T jumped in front in the opening inning of the contest as Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) doubled with one out and scored on a hit by Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) that went off the pitcher's glove and past the shortstop into left field.  The Miners then proceeded to break the game open in the second as they sent 10 men to the plate and scored six times.

The inning started with a leadoff single by Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei), followed by a bunt single by Tyler Schutt (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch).  After a pair of balks by Bobcat pitcher Collin Webber brought home Richter, Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles) dropped down a bunt and Schutt scored; a throwing error on the play allowed Swindle to advance to second.

Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) singled home Swindle to make it 5-0, then after a walk to Johnson and a fly out by Portwood, Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) doubled to left center to score two more to complete the scoring in the second.

S&T batted around again in a seven-run fourth as it sent 13 hitters to the plate in that inning.  The first run scored on a fielder's choice and the next as Richter reached on an error, then the Miners scored two runs on walks with the bases loaded.

Johnson followed by driving in two with a hit and Portwood drove in the final run with a single to right.

The recipient of the offensive outburst was Mack Preston (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest), who shut out the Bobcats on five hits and struck out three.  College of the Ozarks had its best scoring chance in the fourth, but Johnson threw a runner out at the plate after a hit by Tyler Whiteis.

Missouri S&T finished with 11 hits, getting two apiece from Johnson, Portwood and Ulrich.

The Miners, now 22-18 on the season, will host GLVC West Division co-leader William Jewell in a four-game weekend series starting Saturday with a noon doubleheader.   S&T's four seniors will be honored prior to the start of Saturday's first contest.
