ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball squad looks to build off their 4-0 win over Drury on Tuesday as it heads to Kansas City this weekend to take on William Jewell and Rockhurst. The Lady Miners and Cardinals will square off on Friday beginning at 2 p.m. while the games against the Hawks will take place at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
S&T snapped its 16-game losing streak on Tuesday with the second game win over the Panthers. The Lady Miners got a solid pitching performance from
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) as she held Drury to just three hits and a walk in the complete game 89 pitch effort.
Olivia Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) paced the offense with a pair of hits and scored the game-winning run on
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette )'s triple in the third inning.
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) continues to lead S&T in hitting with a .377 average while Weiss is close behind at .375. The Lady Miners have five players currently hitting over .300 in their lineup. Over her last six games Culbertson has gone 5-for-9 with a pair of runs scored and has raised her batting average nearly 100 points.
Strope leads the pitching staff with a 1-4 record and an earned run average of 3.75. She's allowed 23 runs, 20 earned, on 39 hits with 10 strikeouts against 15 walks in 37.1 innings. Opponents are hitting .277 against her this season.
William Jewell enters Friday's doubleheader with a record of 17-12 and are 5-9 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Cardinals are currently riding a four-game losing after dropping a doubleheader at Rockhurst on Tuesday. Prior to that WJC had won seven of its past 10 games which included a win at 11
th ranked Indianapolis.
Faith Song leads the Cardinal attack with an average of .407 while Nona Pauline is hitting .398. Song and Pauline have combined to hit 12 of the team's 22 home runs. In the circle, Song leads the way with a 4-1 record and a 3.50 ERA. She's allowed 18 runs, 17 earned, on 38 hits with 18 strikeouts against 12 walks. She's tossed two complete games and has a shutout.
Rockhurst enters play this weekend at 17-11, 8-6 in the GLVC after sweeping William Jewell on Tuesday. The Hawks have won four straight and 10 of their last 14 contests.
As a team, Rockhurst is hitting .282 and is led by Madison Wagner with a .414 average. Lexie Zuniga has hit a team best six home runs while Caroline Lipp has hit four roundtrippers. Zuniga, Wagner and Gabbie Boerema have combined to drive in 33 of the team's 95 runs on the season.
In the circle, the Hawks are led by Bridgette Sappington who has a 13-5 record with a 1.85 ERA. In 117.1 innings pitched she's allowed 48 runs, 31 earned, on 112 hits with 67 strikeouts against 27 walks. Opponents are hitting .242 off of her and have hit six home runs.
