KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T dropped its second straight one-run game to Truman State Sunday afternoon, as the Bulldogs got a
2-1 win on Dave Gambino's two-run walkoff homer in the bottom of the seventh after S&T had scored in the top half of the inning to take the lead.
The win came in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader between the Miners (20-17, 15-11 GLVC) and Bulldogs (25-13, 16-10 GLVC), but a line of storms that came through Kirksville shortly after the conclusion of game one forced the postponement of the nightcap until Monday.
S&T and Truman will play a doubleheader Monday starting at noon to complete the weekend series that has been hampered by the weather.
Sunday's game was scoreless through the first six innings. S&T had a runner in scoring position in the third when
Collin Zurweller (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) led off with a hit and was sacrificed to second, but the Miners couldn't cash in that chance. It had another opportunity in the fourth when
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) doubled with one out, but Truman starter Kirk Frantz retired the next two hitters to halt that opportunity.
The Bulldogs had a runner reach second in the opening inning on Paul Trenhaile's two-out double, but got no other runner into scoring position through the sixth inning. S&T starter
Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield) picked off two runners along the way to get out of innings.
S&T finally broke through in the seventh, as
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) singled with one out, moved ahead on a ground out by
Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) and scored on an opposite field single off the bat of Zurweller.
However, in the bottom of the seventh, Trenhaile reached on an infield single before Gambino homered to right center to give the Bulldogs the victory, spoiling a tremendous pitching performance by Bedsworth.
The Miner lefty fanned seven and allowed just seven hits in the contest. S&T also had seven hits, two of them by Zurweller and
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central).
