ROLLA, Mo. – After a number of postponements delayed the start of its home schedule, Missouri S&T finally got to play on its home diamond Sunday and split a doubleheader with McKendree University, winning the second game
4-2 after losing a
1-0 decision in game one.
The Miners were held scoreless over the first 11 innings of play Sunday before breaking loose for three runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap to take the lead for good.
The inning started with a hit by
Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union), who then stole second and moved on to third following a hit by
Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei).
Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles) followed with a single into right center that tied the score and sent Richter on to third.
Tyler Schutt (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) laid down a perfect squeeze bunt on the next pitch to score Richter and reached base when the throw went to the plate.
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) drove in the third run of the inning with a hit following the Schutt bunt, then added another run-scoring hit in the seventh to drive in Richter.
Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield) allowed only three hits and struck out five over the first six innings to get the win, allowing only a single run in the third. The Bearcats got a run off
Jordan Farley (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage) during his two innings of work, while Brown pitched around a two-out walk in the ninth to pick up the save.
S&T outhit McKendree 11-5 in the second game, with Schutt, Brown and Richter all getting two hits apiece.
The opening game was a pitcher's dual between S&T's
Micah Dohlen (Kent, Wash./Kent Lake) and the Bearcats' Sam Lidisky, as both hurlers carried shutouts into the seventh inning.
Dohlen pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fourth to keep the game scoreless, while the Miners missed opportunities with runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and sixth innings. After falling behind in the top of the seventh on Tyson Boehne's two-out single, S&T got its leadoff hitter on in the bottom half when
Matt Reschke (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) reached on an error. However, Lidisky got the next three hitters to end the contest.
Dohlen struck out six and allowed six hits in his complete game effort, while
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) had two of S&T's five hits.
The Miners (2-5) and Bearcats (1-4) will play a single game Monday starting at 1 p.m.
