Miners outlast Rangers to gain split of GLVC-opening twinbill

ROLLA, Mo. – After getting off the mat twice to extend the game, Missouri S&T got a run in the bottom of the 12th inning to gain a split of its Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Sunday with Wisconsin-Parkside at the S&T Baseball Field.

John Ceriotti (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS)'s two-out RBI single plated Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) to give the Miners a 7-6 win in the nightcap, after the Rangers won the opener 15-5.

The Miners led 3-0 heading into the sixth inning before UW-Parkside scored four times to take the lead.  S&T tied the score in the bottom of the seventh with two outs when Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) doubled home Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) – just moments after Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) was thrown out at the plate on a close play.

UW-Parkside then took the lead back in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Jake Kolasinski, followed by an error that allowed a second run to score.  But the Miners answered right back, beginning with an error when Ranger pitcher John Perez missed first base on a ground ball to the right side that allowed Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles) to reach.

Bodenstab followed with a hit, then Brown singled down the line in right to score Swindle and send Bodenstab to third.  Tyler Schutt (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) followed with a squeeze bunt that scored Bodenstab with the tying run.

Devin Muir (Roseburg, Ore./Days Creek) pitched out of a two-on, one-out jam in the 10th, then Mack Preston (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) threw two perfect innings to keep the game tied for the Miners to finally win it in the 12th.

An error also started the rally in the 12th, which allowed Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) to reach with one out.  Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) singled Ulrich around to third, then with a contact play on, Ulrich was cut down at the plate on a ball off the bat of pinch-hitter Tylor McNiel (Plato, Mo./Plato)

Ceriotti, who had gone hitless in five at-bats in the contest, followed by lacing Joseph Plaud's first pitch up the middle to bring home Johnson with winning run.

The Miners broke a scoreless tie in the fourth on an RBI double by Karbowski, who then scored on a hit by Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe).  S&T scored again in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Bodenstab.

Preston, the last of six pitchers used by S&T in the second game, picked up the win.  S&T outhit the Rangers 17-10, as Brown finished with four hits and Johnson with three.

In game one, the Rangers scored four times off S&T starter Ryan Bearden (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) in the first, but the Miners got those four back in the bottom half of the inning.  S&T got its first run courtesy of a bases loaded walk to Johnson, then Collin Zurweller (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) singled home two; a throwing error on the play allowed a third run to score to tie the contest.

However, the Rangers scored three runs in the second, third and fourth innings to break the game open, as they outhit the Miners 20-3.  S&T had only one hit after the first inning run scoring single by Zurweller.

The Miners (5-7, 1-1 GLVC) and Rangers (2-3, 1-1 GLVC) will wrap up their four-game set with another twinbill at the S&T Baseball Field beginning at noon.
