INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Great Lakes Valley Conference leader Indianapolis raced out of the gate in the first half and clinched its fourth straight conference title at the expense of Missouri S&T Saturday night with a
38-14 win at Key Stadium.
The Greyhounds led 28-0 at the break as they outgained the Miners 287-86 in the opening half. UIndy scored on a four-play, 70-yard drive on its first possession and added two more long scoring drives and a punt return for a score in the first half to build the big lead.
UIndy's first score, which came on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Connor Barthel to Reece Horn, came one play after the Greyhounds caught a big break. Andrew Walker had broken loose on a run into the Miner secondary, but had the ball knocked free by
Jeremi Ross (Valencia, Calif./Hollywood). Malcolm Fogle recovered the fumble 11 yards downfield to set up the scoring pass on the next play.
S&T's best scoring opportunity in the first half came on the possession that followed, set up by a 38-yard pass from
Lamar Wilkes (Maryland Heights, Mo./Pattonville) to
Braxton Graham (Seneca, Mo./Seneca) that moved the Miners to the UIndy 20-yard line. That chance, however, ended with a missed field goal to keep the Miners down by a touchdown.
The teams swapped punts after that, but on the Miners' punt, Horn ran it back 47 yards for a touchdown to extend the Greyhound lead. UIndy would add scores the next two times it got the ball, getting a two-yard touchdown run by Barthel and another Barthel-to-Horn scoring pass of six yards that made it 28-0.
Walker, who ran for 129 yards, posted a 65-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter and Brad Schickel hit a 21—yard field goal before the Miners got on the board two minutes into the fourth quarter as
Tyler Swart (Dickinson, Texas/Dickinson) connected with
Spencer Elrod (Lancaster, Calif./Eastside) on a 77-yard scoring pass.
S&T put together an 80-yard scoring drive later in the fourth quarter that concluded with a three-yard touchdown run by
DeSoto Dickson (Florissant, Mo./Trinity Catholic).
The Miners were held to a season-low 57 yards on the ground and finished the night with 253 total yards. Swart completed all four of his throws for 126 yards, while Graham and
Spencer Elrod (Lancaster, Calif./Eastside) both finished with over 100 all-purpose yards. Elrod had 154 including his long touchdown catch, while Graham ended the game with 121.
Linebacker
Landon Compton (Lamar, Mo./Lamar) led the Miner defense with 10 tackles and
Andrew Masters (Kearney, Mo./Kearney) ended up with six.
Indianapolis (9-1, 7-0 GLVC), ranked 18
th in this week's AFCA coaches poll, finished with 446 yards of total offense.
Missouri S&T, who dropped to 4-5 and 4-3 in the GLVC, wraps up its 2015 campaign next Saturday when it hosts Quincy in a 1 p.m. contest at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
