ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T used a quick first half blitz to take a lead over Truman State, then held on in the final minutes to claim a
2-1 victory Friday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
The Miners scored twice in a span of 2:11 in the early stages of the game and kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard until a failed clearing attempt with just over six minutes to play led to a goal that cut the lead in half. From there, S&T held off Truman, as both shot attempts by the Bulldogs in the final two minutes went wide of the net.
S&T got on the scoreboard at the 15:55 mark when
Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) stole a Bulldog clearing attempt and ripped a shot from about 25 yards away past goalkeeper Jory Knernschield.
Just over two minutes later, the Miners scored again when
Ryan Lawhead (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township)'s cross reached
Martin Klevjer (Trondheim, Norway) on the opposite side of the box and he put it home to give S&T the early two-goal lead.
The two teams combined for only five shot attempts in the first half.
As the second half moved along, the Bulldogs started getting more scoring chances, getting two shots on net before getting a goal when Brian Kane got to an unsuccessful clearing attempt and hit a shot – with Miner goalkeeper
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) caught away from the play – past two Miner defenders trying to protect the goal to bring the Bulldogs to within a goal.
However, Truman only got the two shot attempts that were off the mark after scoring as the Miners held on.
The Bulldogs (6-6, 5-4 GLVC) outshot S&T 9-5 for the game, as Posey finished with two saves in goal for S&T.
The Miners (6-5, 6-3 GLVC) will host Quincy – who fell 3-2 at Drury Friday to drop into second place in the league standings – Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
