ROLLA, Mo. – A goal by Quincy's Taylor Reis in the 64
th minute of play broke a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon to give the Hawks a
2-1 victory over Missouri S&T in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at the S&T Soccer Field.
Reis got a pass from Jordan Stephens and hit a shot from the top of the box past S&T goalkeeper
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) to put the Hawks in front. That proved to be the game-winner in a contest where the Miners held a 21-11 advantage in shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.
Quincy took the initial lead in the game when Michael Timmerman headed in a corner kick by Xhovani Dokaj at the 32:49 mark, but the Miners tied it with 2:53 left in the first half when
Ryan Lawhead (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) sent a lead pass to
Will McIntyre (Queenstown, New Zealand), who put it past Hawk goalkeeper Nate Griffin to knot the score.
The Miners had opportunities late after Quincy (8-3-1, 7-2-1 GLVC) regained the lead, including a head ball by
Mitch Morris (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) off a corner kick that just missed the mark and one in the final seconds of play when a pass went through the box but was just out of the reach of a sliding Miner off the far post.
The Miners (6-6, 6-4 GLVC) return to action Wednesday when they take on Lindenwood in a non-conference match in St. Charles, Mo. Game time is at 7 p.m.
