ST. CHARLES, Mo. – After suffering a tough loss in overtime a year ago at home to Lindenwood, Missouri S&T turned the tables on the Lions Wednesday in sudden fashion with an overtime victory of its own as Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) scored 4:40 into extra time to give S&T a 1-0 victory.Given a free kick opportunity about 35 yards away from the goal, Abichabki drilled the direct free kick into the upper left corner to break the scoreless tie and send the Miners home a winner on the only shot taken by either team in the overtime session.
The first half was an evenly played affair, as the Lions had three shots to two for the Miners in a scoreless 45 minutes of play.
Both teams had scoring chances in the second half, with the best coming when Lindenwood's Fernando Cordero hit the crossbar in the 73
rd minute. The Miners, meanwhile, had four corner kick opportunities after the intermission but were unable to cash one of them in.
S&T goalkeeper
James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) turned away a pair of shots on net in the final five minutes of regulation time to keep the game scoreless, as the Lions (6-4-2) outshot S&T 8-4 in the second 45-minute session.
Holloway finished the game with seven saves as he recorded his eighth career shutout, moving him into sole possession of sixth place on the Miners' all-time list.
Wednesday's win was the Miners' first in an overtime game in over two years, dating back to an Oct. 6, 2013 win at Missouri-St. Louis. S&T (7-6), playing in its first overtime game of the 2015 season, had gone 0-2-3 in games that had gone beyond 90 minutes since that win at UMSL.
The Miners return to Great Lakes Valley Conference action Friday when they host Lewis in a 7:30 p.m. game at the S&T Soccer Field.
