ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T improved its standing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference playoff race Friday with a
2-0 shutout over Lewis at the S&T Soccer Field, its third win in its last four league outings.
The victory, which was also the fourth in the Miners' last five games, improved S&T to 7-4 in the GLVC and 8-6 overall and allowed it to keep pace with Bellarmine and Saint Joseph's in the league race.
That trio all moved into a tie for third Friday thanks to losses by Indianapolis to league leader Rockhurst in overtime and by Drury at home to Wisconsin-Parkside – whom the Miners host Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
On Friday, the Miners got on the scoreboard in the 29
th minute of play when
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) hit a shot from the top of the box that got between the crossbar and the outstretched arms of Lewis goalkeeper Justin Salazar. Andrade's goal was assisted by
Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) and
Ryan Lawhead (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township), who sent a ball ahead that Abichabki dropped back to Andrade for the shot.
Andrade had a hand in the second goal as well, combining with
Maxi Fuchs (Munich, Germany) to get the ball to Abichabki, who scored his eighth goal of the year by hitting a shot from the top of the box past Salazar in the 64
th minute.
S&T's defense took care of matters from there, holding the Flyers (1-11-1, 1-9-1 GLVC) to just two shots on goal in the game. The Miners outshot Lewis 13-10 overall as Miner goalie
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) finished with two saves on the two attempts on net.
