Miners play to scoreless draw with Pumas, stay in 4th in GLVC

RENSSELAER, Ind. – Missouri S&T and Saint Joseph's, two teams vying to host a game next weekend in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, played to a 0-0 tie Sunday and now find themselves tied for the fourth place spot in the league standings with one game to play.

Combined with Bellarmine's loss at Maryville Sunday and Drury's setback at Indianapolis, the Miners and Pumas now enter the final game of the season Wednesday tied for fourth at 8-5-1 in GLVC play.  The top four teams will host a first round contest next Sunday in the tournament.

Missouri S&T – who has already clinched a berth to the tournament -- will host Drury Wednesday in its regular season finale, while Saint Joseph's plays at Indianapolis and Bellarmine hosts Southern Indiana.

The Pumas outshot the Miners 8-3 in the opening half with S&T goalkeeper James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) stopping all three shots on net.  The Miners held the advantage in shots over the next 55 minutes of play before the Pumas had all four shots in the second overtime period.

In the second half, both teams had scoring opportunities in the closing minutes of regulation time as Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) had a shot stopped by Puma goalkeeper Adam Whybrow and the S&T defense blocked a shot by Branden Thompson.

The Miners got a corner kick with just over 90 seconds left, then the Pumas had one in the final 30 seconds, but neither team could convert those opportunities into goals; SJC's Jack Miller had one last opportunity to score as the clock was expiring but was off the mark to send the contest went into overtime.

Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) had a scoring chance midway through the first overtime period that Whybrow turned away and in the second extra period, Holloway stopped a scoring chance with 90 seconds remaining by Alex Becker.

Saint Joseph's (9-5-1) finished with a 17-11 advantage in shots and had five on goal to S&T's four; Holloway finished with five saves as he recorded his third straight shutout and 10th of his Miner career, moving him into sole possession of fifth place on the program's all-time list.

The Miners (9-7-1) and Drury will face off at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the S&T Soccer Field.
