Miners blank Panthers, will host first round game in GLVC Tournament

ROLLA, Mo. – Two second half goals by Missouri S&T gave the Miners a 2-0 victory Wednesday night in their regular season finale over Drury at Allgood-Bailey Stadium – and a later result in its favor will allow S&T to play at least one more time at home this year.

Nearly 20 minutes after the Miners had wrapped up their win, Indianapolis scored in the 107th minute to down Saint Joseph's 2-1 to give S&T the fourth seed in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.  The Miners will play Saint Joseph's, the fifth seed, at 1 p.m. Sunday at the S&T Soccer Field.

Following a scoreless first half where the shots were even but one where Drury had the play on the Miners' end of the field a majority of the time, S&T broke on top shortly after the intermission.

Ryan Lawhead (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) sent a long pass down the field in the direction of Austin Parks (Rolla, Mo./Rolla), who had to hold up to corral the ball in.  Parks then hit a shot from about 20 yards away to the right of a diving Nicholas Helin into the back of the net to give S&T a 1-0 lead at the 47:55 mark.

From that point, the Miner defense suffocated Drury's offensive attack, as the Panthers had only one shot in the second half.

S&T got an insurance goal with 16:38 to go when Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) took a cross-field pass from Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and beat Helin on the near post.

The Miners (10-7-1, 9-5-1 GLVC) outshot the Panthers (7-8-2, 7-6-2 GLVC) 11-7 for the game as James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) recorded his fourth straight shutout in goal for S&T.  Holloway finished with two saves.

With the win, Missouri S&T reached the 10-win mark for a season for the first time since 2011 and for the 12th time in the 37-year history of the program.

The other first round matchups will pit top-seeded Rockhurst against Southern Indiana, No. 2 seed Indianapolis against Drury and third-seeded Quincy against Bellarmine.  The highest remaining seed will host the semifinals and finals starting Nov. 6.
