ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri S&T fought back throughout the second half Friday afternoon to even the score with Maryville, but the Saints got a goal with just under three minutes to play in regulation time to pull out a
2-1 win over the Miners.
After allowing a goal late in the first half, the Miners were able to draw even on a goal by
David Murphy (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) with 8:21 to play, as he took a pass from
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and scored from about 10 yards away.
Nearly five minutes later, the Saints scored the game winner when Ryan Schlich scored from the right side of the box and held off a late challenge by S&T, as it had two corner kick opportunities with a little over a minute remaining.
Maryville (5-4-1, 3-3-1 GLVC) took the initial lead in the contest on Colby Gumm's goal with 2:26 left in the first half, as he took a cross and hit a shot into the upper right corner of the net.
The Miners (4-5, 4-3 GLVC) outshot the Saints 10-8 in the contest and had three shots on net;
Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) led the Miners with three shots overall.
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) was credited with one save in the nets for the Miners.
Missouri S&T will return to St. Louis Sunday to take on Missouri-St. Louis in a 2:30 p.m. contest.
